The purpose of this study was to analyze how the challenges of urban schools influence physical education teachers' emotional understanding and connections with their students and the implications on their teaching. Sixty-one elementary physical educators from an urban school district in the midwestern U.S. were interviewed multiple times (N = 136) over 3 years using interpretive methodology. Teachers reported five unique challenges that significantly shaped their thinking about students and their careers, along with strategies they used to overcome or manage those challenges. The challenges were: (a) insufficient instructional resources, (b) implementing culturally relevant pedagogy, (c) dealing with community violence, (d) integrating more games in curricula, and (e) teaching in a culture of basketball. Implications centered on the guilt-inducing nature of urban teaching, developing an informed and realistic vision of urban physical education, and the role of teacher preparation and professional development.  相似文献

Using a multi-theory approach, the current study was designed to identify gender differences in the psychological mechanisms by which urban adolescents’ motivation in physical education transfers into their leisure-time activities. The theoretical frameworks of Self-Determination Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior were integrated to generate a trans-contextual model. Urban adolescents (N = 837, ages 11–15) completed questionnaires assessing relevant psychological constructs as well as their levels of physical activity during leisure time. Path analysis was used to test the direct and indirect paths of the model. Results support the model tenability and demonstrate its invariance across gender. Although there were several gender-specialized characteristics, perceived competence in physical education was the strongest predictor of leisure-time physical activity for both male and female urban adolescents. The finding suggests that nurturing urban adolescents’ autonomy and competence in physical education is important for enhancing leisure-time physical activity intentions and behaviors.  相似文献

We present a project that used the Iowa Caucus, an American political tradition, to support English-language instruction in Belgium and Luxembourg. Educators acknowledge that the cultural dimension is critically important in the acquisition of foreign languages, yet questions remain about effective ways to incorporate it in the classroom. Begun as an attempt by two American educators to introduce European students to American culture, our activity went further, addressing core questions about how we interpret cultural identity. Just as grassroots democracy is able to shift control of political narratives to individual voters, we found that our student-centered role-play shifted control of cultural narrative to participating students. Thus, we argue that students were more than viewers: they felt ownership of a piece of Americana. Our engaging pedagogical tool can be of use to social studies and language teachers, both abroad and in America, who are too often caught between presenting politics and culture as “fossilized” and who struggle to create a living representation of culture in the classroom. Finally, we situate our findings in the context of larger educational trends, particularly critical pedagogy and foreign-language instruction theory, which we use to foreground a discussion about the challenges of describing and interpreting culture.  相似文献

Using a three-part theoretical framework, the cultural relevance cycle-which consists of (a) knowing community dynamics, (b) knowing how community dynamics influence educational processes, and (c) implementing strategies that reflect cultural knowledge of the community--we examined teachers' and students' perspectives on culturally relevant physical education in urban settings. We observed and interviewed 53 physical education teachers and 183 students in urban districts over 4 years. We identified themes of care, respect, language and communication, and curricular content that explained how these teachers enacted the cultural relevance cycle. Within these themes, teachers and students specified global and discipline-specific components of care, the rflattening of social hierarchies among students and between students and teachers, accommodation of English as a second language and urban communication, and relevant curricular content as necessary for achieving cultural relevance. Enacting the cycle of cultural relevance resulted in respectful learning environments in which students were highly engaged; however very few teachers enacted all three steps of the cycle.  相似文献

Lack of motivation, or amotiation, is emerging as a critical issue in high school physical education. The Amotivation Inventory-Physical Education (Shen, Winger, Li, Sun, & Rukavina, 2010) was developed to measure the multidimensional nature of amotivation construct in physical education. This study was designed to examine the consistency of the metric properties of Amotivation Inventory-Physical Education scores by evaluating their factorial structure for invariance across gender in a sample of 985 urban inner-city high school adolescents. Latent mean invariance was also tested. Results revealed that constraining factor loadings and intercepts in sequential configural, metric, and scalar invariances had no meaningful impact on model fit. However, gender might play a role in the magnitude of factor scores. Findings suggest that the four-factor structure of the Amotivation Inventory-Physical Education is a satisfactory representation of motivational deficits for urban inner-city adolescents and provide significant validity evidence for the scale scores in urban high school settings.  相似文献

While seductive details are enjoyable, they are unimportant content or activities intentionally inserted to make class fun and interesting. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of seductive details on students' learning of net games in physical education. Participants were 240 middle school students. A videotaped lesson example named “outfox your opponent” was used as the stimulus, and a 2 x 3 (condition x grade) factorial analysis was designed. The results showed that seductive details directly interrupted students' recall of important learning content and transferring problem solving in learning net games. It is suggested that the function of seductive details on learning should be reconsidered when designing effective motivational strategies in physical education.  相似文献

Learners of all ages face complex decisions about how to study effectively. Here we investigated three such decisions made in concert—time allocation, ordering, and spacing. First, college students were presented with, and made judgments of learning about, 16 word-synonym pairs. Then, when presented with all 16 pairs, they created their own study schedule by choosing when and how long to study each item. The results indicated that (a) the most study time was allocated to difficult items, (b) relatively easy items tended to be studied first, and (c) participants spaced their study at a rate significantly greater than chance. The spacing data, which are of particular interest, differ from previous findings that have suggested that people, including adults, believe massing is more effective than spacing.  相似文献

Reading historical intelligence community documents primarily through the lens of Kenneth Burke's essay “Semantic and Poetic Meaning,” this article explores the history and stakes of the intelligence community's ongoing commitment to a problematic model of language use. The essay argues that the intelligence community's pursuit of a “mathematical” ideology of language is an attempt to render language “neutral” and to divorce rhetoric from ethics in ways that Burke anticipated, and with negative consequences for the generation of written intelligence reports and national policy decisions.  相似文献

A multisite qualitative study investigated the experiences of six group leaders and 10 group members who participated in seven different university counseling center international student support groups. Analyses of interview data using hermeneutic interpretation resulted in nine major themes and 10 subthemes organized into four sections: (a) recruitment and group design, (b) experiences of group members, (c) experiences of group leaders, and (d) additional considerations.  相似文献
