An analysis of transaction logs to evaluate the educational needs of end users

End users at the University of Southern California (USC) have free access to the last ten years of MEDLINE through a local online system known as USCInfo. Librarians at USC Norris Medical Library provide documentation and offer formal and informal training on the use of the system to search MEDLINE. To assess the educational needs of the end users, 643 searches were analyzed. Although a high proportion (84%) of the searches were judged to be successful, the use of medical subject headings (MeSH) to obtain optimal results was low; only 20% of all successful subject searches employed MeSH. Also, the advanced features of the system were underutilized. While it is promising to learn that many end users are obtaining positive results, methods which will encourage end users improve their retrievals need to be developed.     

Schedule induction and the temporal distributions of adjunctive behavior on periodic water schedules

The ability of periodic water reinforcement schedules to induce or entrain activities was investigated by having observers classify mutually exclusive and exhaustive activities of 10 rats placed in a rich environment with various fixed-time schedules of water delivery. For each activity measured, three characteristics of induced behavior were examined: (1) its excessiveness; (2) the commonly observed inverted-U relation between rate of induced behavior and rate of reinforcement; and (3) the observation that induced activities occur earlier in interreinforcement intervals than do facultative activities, producing multimodal activity distributions. All activities were demonstrated to be noninduced, facultative activities, and none could be classified as schedule-induced behavior by any of the three criteria. The factors that determine the temporal distributions of all activities appeared to be equivalent to the factors that determine the distributions of scheduleinduced activities in situations in which only the induced activities are available.     

Online Faculty Development and Assessment System (OFDAS): A Study of Academic Learning

The rapid growth of online learning has led to the development of faculty inservice evaluation models that are geared towards the demands of quality improvement of degree programs. Based on the best practices of student online assessment, the Online Faculty Development and Assessment System (OFDAS) created at the Canary Islands was designed to serve the dual purpose of faculty development and classroom learning environment assessment. Results of analyses showed that OFDAS maximized the potential of online faculty development to encourage staff to reflect on Curriculum and Teaching Capacities (CTC). Implications were discussed in terms of emphasizing the process of online CTC learning and incorporating perspectives to capture a comprehensive view of faculty teaching attitudes and their association with student classroom learning perceptions.     

How do apes ape?

In the wake of telling critiques of the foundations on which earlier conclusions were based, the last 15 years have witnessed a renaissance in the study of social learning in apes. As a result, we are able to review 31 experimental studies from this period in which social learning in chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans has been investigated. The principal question framed at the beginning of this era, Do apes ape? has been answered in the affirmative, at least in certain conditions. The more interesting question now is, thus, How do apes ape? Answering this question has engendered richer taxonomies of the range of social-learning processes at work and new methodologies to uncover them. Together, these studies suggest that apes ape by employing a portfolio of alternative social-learning processes in flexibly adaptive ways, in conjunction with nonsocial learning. We conclude by sketching the kind of decision tree that appears to underlie the deployment of these alternatives.     

Difficulties in Learning Thermodynamic Concepts Are They Linked to the Historical Development of this Field?

Students' misunderstanding of basic thermodynamic concepts is analysed on historicalgrounds. The persistence of some ideas from the caloric model are found to be reinforced bymagnitude names and unit definitions that were brought up at the early stages of thermodynamic development. The failure of many popular textbooks to make a clear distinction between internal energy and heat is also explored and related to Students' learning difficulties. Some hints that may help to improve Students' understanding are presented.     

Gender discourse about an ethic of care: nursery schoolteachers' perspectives

In this paper we will show some of the results of research which took place in the Principality of Asturias (Spain). Its purpose was finding out the gender discourses used by nursery teachers. Although we will not provide an exhaustive list of all the conclusions reached so far, we will put forward one of the aspects which has been developed throughout the investigation; that is, we will discuss some of our observations and hypotheses on the differences observed by the teachers in boys and girls' caring and supporting behaviours. In order to do so, we focus on the type of discourse related to the ethic of care. We consider it a tool which allows teachers to build a type of narrative in which boys and girls are presented as opposites, relational and different from one another.
