This paper describes the user-focused approach to information skills at MMU Library. It covers the following cycle: identifying training needs at three levels (organisation, group and individual); developing a training strategy and materials; marketing information skills within MMU. This study reports the findings of research undertaken by health sciences librarians at the University of Queensland Library into how medical students use information for their studies, particularly resources and services provided by the Library. The methods utilized were an online survey and focus groups. Results indicated that students favor print resources over electronic, value accessing resources on a one-stop basis, and prefer training to be delivered flexibly. The implication of these results for future resource selection, service provision, and instructional design and delivery is discussed.  相似文献

The Foundation Programme of the Centre for Science Access at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa provides access to tertiary science studies to educationally disadvantaged students who do not meet formal faculty entrance requirements. The low number of students proceeding from the programme into mainstream is of concern, particularly given the national imperative to increase participation and levels of performance in tertiary-level science. An attempt was made to understand foundation student performance in a campus of this university, with the view to identifying challenges and opportunities for remediation in the curriculum and processes of selection into the programme. A classification and regression tree analysis was used to identify which variables best described student performance. The explanatory variables included biographical and school-history data, performance in selection tests, and socio-economic data pertaining to their year in the programme. The results illustrate the prognostic reliability of the model used to select students, raise concerns about the inefficiency of school performance indicators as a measure of students' academic potential in the Foundation Programme, and highlight the importance of accommodation arrangements and financial support for student success in their access year.  相似文献

This paper reports on data drawn from a study exploring the educational strategies of 62 Black Caribbean heritage middle-class parents. In this paper, we consider the respective roles of race and class in the shaping of parents’ educational strategies, deploying an analysis that focuses on their intersection and seeks to hold both race and class in productive tension. This article examines the implications of the Primary Strategy for primary school teachers. It focuses on the framework for learning and teaching across the curriculum (DfES, 2003, Chapter 3 ‘Excellent primary teaching’) and questions whether the new framework is in fact a return to a ‘whole’ curriculum approach. The key issues explored are: curriculum and assessment; and sharing practice; all of which present challenges for primary teachers. An electrokinetic driven microfluidic lab-on-a-chip was developed for glucose quantification using double-enzyme assay. The enzymatic glucose assay involves the two-step oxidation of glucose, which was catalyzed by hexokinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, with the concomitant reduction of NADP+ to NADPH. A fluorescence microscopy setup was used to monitor the different processes (fluid flow and enzymatic reaction) in the microfluidic chip. A two-dimensional finite element model was applied to understand the different aspects of design and to improve the performance of the device without extensive prototyping. To our knowledge this is the first work to exploit numerical simulation for understanding a multisubstrate double-enzyme on-chip assay. The assay is very complex to implement in electrokinetically driven continuous system due to the involvement of many species, which has different transport velocity. With the help of numerical simulation, the design parameters, flow rate, enzyme concentration, and reactor length, were optimized. The results from the simulation were in close agreement with the experimental results. A linear relation exists for glucose concentrations from 0.01 to 0.10 g l−1. The reaction time and the amount of enzymes required were drastically reduced compared to off-chip microplate analysis.  相似文献
