Evaluating two approaches to helping college students understand evolutionary trees through diagramming tasks 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1 下载免费PDF全文
To understand evolutionary theory, students must be able to understand and use evolutionary trees and their underlying concepts. Active, hands-on curricula relevant to macroevolution can be challenging to implement across large college-level classes where textbook learning is the norm. We evaluated two approaches to helping students learn macroevolutionary topics. Treatment 1 is a laboratory for the software program EvoBeaker designed to teach students about evolutionary trees. We tested Treatment 1 among nine college-level biology classes and administered pre/posttests to assess learning gains. We then sought to determine whether the learning gains from Treatment 1 were comparable to those derived from an alternate hands-on treatment, specifically the combination of a prerecorded lecture on DVD and paper-based activity based on Goldsmith's Great Clade Race (Treatment 2). Comparisons of pre- and posttests among participants using either Treatment 1 or 2 show large learning gains on some misconceptions and skills beyond knowledge gained from reading standard textbook entries. Both treatments performed equivalently in overall learning gains, though both had areas where they performed better or worse. Furthermore, gains among students who used Treatment 1 representing a wide range of universities suggest that outcomes are potentially applicable to a variety of "real-world" biology classes. 相似文献

AbstractWith more investigation into the reception of evolution in non-Christian majority cultures, and the increased awareness that anti-evolution sentiment is a global phenomenon, new educational resources are being developed to meet newly understood needs. This article explores the situation in Israel regarding conceptions of the compatibility of evolution and religion, as well as the educational initiatives being developed to advance dialogue. Included in the article are data from a study in a Jewish, Muslim and Christian school regarding stakeholders’ views on evolution, as well as insights from the first professional development course for Israeli teachers on “Evolution and Faith.” 相似文献

This study examined the kinematic effects of orthoses in participants with a history of chronic Achilles tendon injury. Twelve participants ran at self-selected speeds on a treadmill with and without customized orthoses. Joint and segment angles including leg abduction, calcaneal, eversion, ankle dorsiflexion, and knee flexion angles were calculated from three-dimensional data throughout stance. Five footfalls were obtained for each participant and condition. Statistical tests revealed an increase in maximum eversion with orthoses (P < 0.001, eta(p)2 = 0.642). In the individual participant analysis, this was evident in 9 of 12 participants. Trends towards increased eversion range of motion and decreased ankle dorsiflexion maximum and range of motion angles were also observed. Increased eversion was unexpected as all devices were designed to provide pronation control as deemed necessary by the podiatrist. Despite this, participants reported between 50 and 100% (average 92%) relief from symptoms with the use of orthoses. Further analysis of the angle-time curves and coordination between angular measures is recommended. 相似文献

In this article we study the determinants of cultural participation in Israel with an emphasis on the Weberian distinction
between class and status. The class measure is based on occupational groupings, and status is operationalized as a rank of
occupations based on social distance. We expect that class will be less important than status in shaping cultural participation
patterns. In addition, due to the importance of ethnicity and religiosity in Israeli society, we expect that these factors
will be significant in shaping cultural participation. Data are based on two telephone surveys conducted in 2006 and 2007
of a random sample of the Jewish population in Israel. We find that, contrary to our expectation, class is more influential
than status. We also find that ethnicity and religiosity are important factors that shape cultural participation patterns.
We discuss possible explanations to the finding regarding class and status, with special attention to the role cultural policy
plays in mediating the economic effect on consumer behavior. We also call for more attention to ethnicity and religiosity
in studies of cultural stratification.

The present study examined whether sublexical morphological processing takes place during visual word-recognition in Hebrew, and whether morphological decomposition of written words depends on lexical activation of the complete word. Furthermore, it examined whether morphological processing is similar when reading Hebrew as a first language (L1) or as a second language (L2), and whether L1’s morphological background, Semitic or Indo-European, modulates morphological processing in L2 Hebrew (a Semitic language), among proficient readers. To reveal the sublexical processing of the Hebrew morphemes, the Root (R) and the Pattern (P), a lexical-decision task was conducted, in which all critical stimuli were non-word letter-strings manipulated to include or exclude real Hebrew morphemes. Different combinations of real (+) and pseudo (?) morphemes yielded four types of non-words (+R+P; +R?P; ?R+P, ?R?P). Three groups of proficient Hebrew readers were tested: L1 Hebrew, L1 English-L2 Hebrew, and L1 Arabic-L2 Hebrew. Results demonstrated significant differences in latency and accuracy of responses to the four morphological conditions, indicating that sublexical morphological processing occurs during visual word-recognition of morphologically structured letter-strings in Hebrew. Importantly, the activation of real Hebrew morphemes occurred in non-word stimuli, indicating that morphological processing in Hebrew is separable from lexical activation. Moreover, the same pattern of results was observed in all three L1 groups, indicating that proficient L2 readers exhibit morphological processing strategies that are tuned to the L2 morphology, regardless of their L1 background. 相似文献

Jerusalem College of Technology (JCT) is a multi-campus institution with identical syllabi for courses in every campus. Moreover, learning at JCT requires at the same time synchronous and asynchronous learning and teaching. For some introductory courses in Mathematics for Engineering students, websites have been built and now upgraded in order to fit the requirements due to multiple campuses. The original triple function model ‘homepage-tutorial-mailing list’ had to be modified in various directions, in order to fit the students' needs and the central role of the course coordinator. We discuss here the structure and management of the websites and the contribution of these supplementary materials towards teaching efficiency and towards students' better learning skills. 相似文献
