'What it Makes Sense to Say': Education, Philosophy and Peter Winch on Social Science

This paper sets out Peter Winch's central ideas about the nature of the social sciences, and reappraises their potential for educational research. It is argued that the dichotomy between 'reasons' and 'causes' has done much harm, and that the important matter of understanding 'what is real for us' has recently been neglected. Winch's philosophy suggests a more adequate framework for educational research: one that embraces a pluralistic interpretive position, accommodating various methods and various kinds of understanding of the social, and that views educational science as involving opportunity for reflection and a degree of distance from the world of practice, yet at the same time as essentially part of the political debate about education.     

Using Oral History Readings in Teaching the History of Counseling

This article describes an assignment using oral history readings to teach the history of counseling and counseling psychology. Student feedback and outcomes are discussed, as well as future research directions.     

Toward the Development of Facilitative Counselors: The Effects of Practicum Instruction and Individual Supervision

The functioning of 22 counseling and therapy practicum students on the dimensions of empathy, regard, genuineness, and concreteness was assessed over a 20-week period. Predictions of growth were made on the basis of the level of functioning of individual supervisors and practicum instructors. It was found that those students with high-level practicum instructors and high-level individual supervisors showed significant growth. The students with high-level practicum instructors and low-level individual supervisors also showed significant gains but took a longer period of time to do so. Those students with low-level practicum instructors and low-level individual supervisors showed no growth on these dimensions.     

Men who become Primary School Teachers: an early portrait

This paper reports the findings of a study which sought to provide improved understanding of what motivates young men to choose primary teaching as a career and their experiences of their university course. It is hoped that the understanding so derived can be used to encourage males to enter the teaching profession at primary level. Sixteen new male graduates were interviewed, just over half had begun the education degree immediately after leaving high school. Working with children was a positive motivation, but teaching was also seen as a desirable career with good working conditions. Parents, both mothers and fathers, were supportive of teaching as a career for their sons. The university course became more interesting for these male students once they were involved directly in schools. They described themselves as less conscientious than female students, but as having interests other than study which gave them an edge in the classroom.

This article discusses multicultural counselor training and outlines strategies for infusing counseling courses with multicultural content. It also describes how a counseling theories course was transformed to infuse multicultural perspectives.
