This article outlines the research design of a large‐scale, longitudinal research study in England intended to describe and explore variations in teachers' work, lives and their effects on pupils' educational outcomes. The study, funded by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and incorporated into the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP) as an ‘Associate Project’, used an innovative mixed‐methods research design to create case studies of 300 teachers in Years 2, 6 and 9. The research was conducted over three consecutive academic years and collected a wide range of data through interviews, questionnaire surveys of teachers' and pupils' views and assessment data on pupils' attainments in English and mathematics. The text summarises the main findings from the research in relation to four interconnected themes of the study: Professional Life Phases; Professional Identity; Relative Effectiveness; and Resilience and Commitment. The influence of school context, in terms of level of social disadvantage of pupil intake, is also investigated. Key findings and their implications for policy and practice are highlighted. 相似文献

This paper re‐analyses data originally gathered as part of a longitudinal study of entrants to teaching in an effort to isolate the conditions which affect the development of a strong professional self‐concept. Differences were found between primary and secondary student teachers. For primary specialists, teaching practice had become the dominant influence in the development of their conceptions of themselves as teachers. Their academic courses were regarded unfavourably as not helpful in their professional development. Secondary specialists viewed their college courses very favourably as the foundation on which their development as teachers during teaching practice was based. Associate teachers in schools had their greatest influence on self‐concept development when they provided a climate marked by autonomy for the student teacher backed up by support and advice. 相似文献

AbstractLateral ankle sprains (LAS) are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries and as a response, clinicians often use external ankle taping prophylactically to reduce the prevalence of injuries. External ankle taping techniques have been shown to significantly reduce passive ankle range of motion; however, there is limited research on the effects of external ankle taping on lower extremity kinematics or kinetics during sport specific tasks. Therefore, our objective was to compare the effects of external ankle taping on ankle, knee and hip kinematics and kinetics compared to no taping during an anticipated sidestep cutting task and a straight sprint task. We conducted a cross-over laboratory study with 16 healthy males. Three-dimensional kinematics and kinetics were collected with a motion capture system and in-ground force plate during 5 trials of a sprint and anticipated side-step cut with or without external ankle taping. Group means and associated 90% confidence intervals were plotted across 100 data points for each task, significance being identified when the confidence intervals did not overlap for three consecutive data points. No significant kinetic or kinematic differences were identified between conditions for the tasks. External ankle taping does not influence lower extremity biomechanics during a control cutting task. 相似文献

Concern with the quality of student engagement and learning in senior high school physics has been evident for many years.
In this study we have focussed on student engagement. Three tasks that utilised a structured discussion, approach to learning
concepts in mechanics were developed in collaborative work with two Year 11 physics teachers. These tasks demanded an initial
individual response from each student, then a single response from groups of three, and then a whole class interpretive dicussion
led by the teacher and based on the group responses. We report the detail of reactions of students and teachers to these tasks
in the two classes taught by the teachers involved in the development of the tasks, and more general reactions from a further

Achievement and underachievement in able children were investigated in three schools in the South of England. Phenomenological techniques were used to explore teachers', parents' and pupils' behaviour and perspectives. Models of achievers and underachievers which arose out of this research were compared with the literature. Particularly important factors which contributed to the children's achievement were supportive parents and teachers who acted in cooperation, although the child also had to have good skills of concentration and presentation, task commitment, high self-esteem and the ability to relate well to peers. In contrast, achievement was demonstrated to be limited when various combinations of these factors were missing. Sample vignettes of participant children are provided to illustrate these points. 相似文献

The need for schools to support children and young people's mental and emotional health is increasingly emphasised in policy initiatives, yet the role of teachers in this has been under explored. This paper reports findings from qualitative, semi‐structured interviews with 14 school staff at eight secondary schools in England, examining emotional health and well‐being (EHWB) activities in which they were involved. Three emergent themes are discussed: (1) a strongly held belief that teaching and EHWB are inevitably linked; (2) a perception that many colleagues outside the study sample are reluctant to engage in EHWB work; and (3) a concern that teachers’ own emotional health needs are neglected, leaving them unable or unwilling to consider those of pupils. The findings endorse whole‐school approaches to emotional health, with a focus on teachers’ training and support needs and clearer aims, including consideration of how such work fits with the broader goals of schools. 相似文献

Wireless sensing solutions that provide accurate long-term monitoring of walking and running gait characteristics in a real-world environment would be an excellent tool for sport scientist researchers and practitioners. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a body-worn wireless gyroscope-based gait analysis application to a marker-based motion capture system for the detection of heel-strike and toe-off and subsequent calculation of gait parameters during walking and running. The gait application consists of a set of wireless inertial sensors and an adaptive algorithm for the calculation of temporal gait parameters. Five healthy subjects were asked to walk and run on a treadmill at two different walking speeds (2 and 4?kph) and at a jogging (8?kph) and running (12?kph) speed. Data were simultaneously acquired from both systems. True error, percentage error and ICC scores indicate that the adaptive algorithm successfully calculated strides times across all speeds. However, results showed poor to moderate agreement for stance and swing times. We conclude that this gait analysis platform is valid for determining stride times in both walking and running. This is a useful application, particularly in the sporting arena, where long-term monitoring of running gait characteristics outside of the laboratory is of interest. 相似文献

The supra-national level has become increasingly important in educational policy formulation. This paper describes and compares
two settings in which growth in these supra-national policies is evident—in Europe and in Africa. Key themes arising in policy
documents in each context are examined. A distinction is drawn in analysis between themes classified as ‘global means’, such
as qualification frameworks and quality assurance mechanisms, which are becoming international norms and which show close
similarity across contexts, and regional goals or ‘themes’ in supra-national policy. The paper argues that although there
are apparent similarities between the policy goals espoused in ‘regional themes’, context plays an important part in understanding
the meanings of these policy goals. In closer analysis, there are differences both in the underlying problems which the policy
goals are intended to address, and in the prioritisation given to these goals. This finding is examined in the light of debates
regarding policy convergence, specifically drawing on Vaira’s (2004) framework for institutional analysis. 相似文献
