Temporal Trends of Malondialdehyde in Stored Human Plasma

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is widely used as oxidative stress biomarker in biomedical research. Plasma is stored in deep freezers generally till analysis. Effect of such storage on MDA values, which may be variable and prolong, was incidentally observed in the ongoing study which is to estimate oxidative stress with oral iron. Plasma from blood samples of pregnant women (20–30 years age) in third trimester of singleton pregnancy (n = 139), consuming oral iron tablets was stored at −20 °C with intention of MDA estimation, as soon as possible. However logistic problems led this storage for prolonged and variable period (1–708 days). When values of MDA estimated using “Ohkawa” 79 method and readings were plotted against time to check the temporal effect, it showed a hyperbolic curve. Standard deviation (SD) was lowest when samples were tested within 3 weeks time. The samples analyzed within 3 weeks had mean ± SD value of 31.59 ± 26.11 μmol/L, while 123.7 ± 93.97 and 366.5 ± 189.8 μmol/L for samples stored for 1–3 and 4 months to 1 year respectively. Mean ± SD were 539.9 ± 196.8 in the samples store for more than a year. Rate of change in values was also lowest (0.0433 μmol/L/day) in the samples tested within first 3 weeks, which rose to 1.2 μmol/L/day during 3 month’s storage. This rate peaked at storage of 120 days (1.87 μmol/L/day) and fell to 0.502 μmol/L/day in the second year of storage. It is concluded that at −20 °C, only 3 weeks of storage time should be considered valid for fairly acceptable stability in MDA values.

Embedding General Education Competencies into an Online Information Literacy Course

ABSTRACT

Assessing core competencies for students who are enrolled in purely online programs poses a challenge to colleges and universities. Our institution has chosen an existing online information literacy course to incorporate and assess general education competencies for an overseas cohort of transfer students. This article presents a brief overview of the course and describes the way in which the course was redesigned to embed and assess the five general education competencies (critical thinking, information literacy, critical reading, quantitative reasoning, and writing).     

Motivation for and Extent of Participation in Organized Sports by High School Seniors

Abstract

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to replicate previous studies in which selected demographic and socioeconomic factors were examined as influences on socialization into youth sport and (b) to extend previous research by analyzing the effects of parental influence on involvement in and motivations toward sport. The range of focus in this study was from the time of the subjects' first encounter with organized sport through the senior year of high school. Data were obtained from direct administration of the questionnaire to twelfth-grade students in four Jackson, Mississippi, high schools. Regression analysis revealed that significant independent variables accounted for nearly 26% of the variance in sport involvement in one setting and nearly 10% of the variance in motivations toward involvement in sport and recreational activities. Subjects' gender, their fathers' past athletic experiences, and mothers' educational levels were the most influential independent variables. Influences varied between school sports and out-of-school sports and over the sports career of subjects.     

Recent trends in education for library and information science in South India

Abstract

Research has shown the value of reading for school children. In South Africa most pupils study through the medium of a second language and their language competence would benefit from wide reading. Teachers should serve as role models to encourage pupils to read, but many are unqualified or underqualified and lack a knowledge of children's books. Often their initial teacher education does not provide them with the necessary knowledge or media to make their classroom presentations more stimulating. Shell Education Service developed the Holdall Lectern and Prompt Posters which provide teachers with compact, flexible media which they can adapt to suit their own needs. The media can be used immediately and teachers' confidence is increased. Pupils learn better and are introduced to a wider variety of popular books. The Holdall Lectern and Prompt Posters have been used successfully for both formal and non-formal education.     

Accountability,democracy, and globalization: a study of broadcast journalism in India

This paper shows that globalization of the Indian broadcast landscape, despite market pressures, has allowed Indian journalists to seek accountability from the government, and has given audiences a broadcast voice. While increasing pro-market focus of news content diminishes emphasis on public service and democratic debates, in many instances, broadcast journalists give voice to the voiceless and seek accountability from the police and political actors. By analyzing news content and journalism practices of several English and Hindi 24-hour news channels, this paper addresses the question as to what extent television journalism's watchdog function continues to strengthen the democratic system and increase democratic participation in India.     

信息在期刊编辑中的作用

当今社会正进入信息时代,信息已渗透到我们社会的每个领域和每个角落,其作用已日益为人们所重视. 科技期刊是信息的载体,它与信息更有着密切关系.信息是编辑工作的先导,又是进行各项编辑活动的依据,选题、组稿、审校及加工整理都离不开信息.一个编辑如果具有较强的信息意识,善于收集和利用与编辑业务有关的信息资料,那么在编辑工作中就能做到有的放矢,而不是盲目瞎闯,并能在编辑工作的全过程中,利用信息指导编辑实践的顺利开展.期刊编辑工作与信息息息相关,编辑的信息观念应贯穿于整个编辑活动之中.     

Your vision with and without trigonometry

When you take a look at anything close-by, your brain computes the position of the object you see by solving a lanky triangle — namely the one formed with the object and your two eyes as its vertices. The brain may call other clues also into service while figuring out positions, especially when the lanky triangles prove far too lanky to afford trigonometric solutions with reasonable accuracy. These non-trigonometric alternatives can run into occasional pitfalls, though. Yet even the trigonometric highway isn’t always foolproof, either. We shall see in what follows that the resulting consequences can be as instructive as they are amusing.
