Special relativity — An exoteric narrative

Some time earlier¹ we treated our readers to an exoteric narrative of special relativity’s kinematics in which we shunned the use of mathematical formulas. However, the simple and concise account presented then has left quite a few questions open, and we now present the promised sequel to supply the requisite answers.

Secondary immunization inhibits drug induced apoptosis<Emphasis Type="Italic">in vivo</Emphasis>

Immunization with a proper dose of an antigenic stimulus leads to cell proliferation and antibody response of circulating lymphocytes. We have previously observed that Secondary immunized spleenocytes resist ceramide-mediated apoptosisin vitro. Our present study is aimed at investigating thein vivo effect of immunization on apoptosis. Mice were subjected to either Primary or Secondary dose with Tetanus Toxoid. Unimmunized spleenocytes served as controls. Unimmunized, Primary and Secondary immunized mice were later exposed to chemotherapeutic drugs such as Etoposide/Methotrexate/Vincristine to induce apoptosis. Apoptosis was studied by using the Feulgen reaction on 5μ thin parafin sections of spleen. It was observed that Secondary immunized mice showed a lower percentage of apoptosis as compared to Primary or Unimmunized mice that was subjected to either of the chemotherapeutic drugs. It was thus concluded that Secondary immunization inhibits the process of chemotherapeutic drug induced apoptosis in vivo.     

Studies on some serum enzyme levels in various liver diseases

Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (EC 3.1.3.1), 5′nucleotidase (5′NT) (EC 3.1.3.5), aldolase (ALD) (EC 4.1.2.13) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) (EC 1.1.1.14) were estimated in infective hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, obstructive jaundice, cirrhosis of liver and amoebic liver abscess. It was observed that serum ALP and 5′NT were significantly increased in all cases of chronic active hepatitis and obstructive hepatic disease. However, the elevation observed in the latter was much higher than the former. Serum SDH and ALD levels were elevated in all cases of infective hepatitis, studied though increase in the former was much higher than the latter, suggesting its significance in the diagnostic confirmation of this disease. Results presented suggest 5′NT and SDH as more reliable diagnostic test compared to ALP and ALD for obstructive jaundice and infective hepatitis respectively.

分析了短信在中国发展的现状，并阐明了短信在发展过程中与我国的体育产业的密切关系；通过短信和其他媒体对体育产业作用的对比分析，说明短信在体育产业中的发展还处于初级阶段，前景十分广阔；未来新技术的发展更为短信与体育产业的结合提供了无限的拓展空间。     

Facilitating Development in Preschoolers with Down's Syndrome in Hong Kong: A Controlled Evaluation Study of the Effects of Centre-based Intervention and Regular Preschool Attendance

Six preschoolers with Down's syndrome who attended a centre-based educational intervention program, for three mornings a week, were assessed on the Merrill-Palmer Scale and matched on chronological age (CA), mental age (MA), intelligence quotient (IQ) and the mother's educational level. Three of them also attended regular preschools, two days per week, but the rest did not. Children were reassessed on the Merrill-Palmer Scale one year late. At that time, parents were interviewed in order to determine their views on the educational intervention program. Results indicated that all children increased in terms of MA, but decreased in terms of IQ and that children in the Program Plus Preschool group, fared better than those in the Program Only group in terms of both MA and IQ. Responses to interview questions indicated that parents were very satisfied with the program; they felt that their children's therapy sessions and the training that they themselves received as part of the intervention, were the most beneficial aspects.
