College Student Success: A Qualitative Modeling Approach

This qualitative study highlighted student perspectives on barriers to success at a community college located in a south Texas city. The study examined barriers to student success, the knowledge that successful students possess to overcome the barriers, and the actions that successful students undertake to overcome the barriers. Padilla's (2004 Padilla , R. V. ( 1999 ). College student retention: Focus on success . Journal of College Student Retention , 1 ( 2 ), 131 – 145 .[Crossref] , [Google Scholar]) theoretical framework and methods for modeling student success provided the conceptual framework for the study. The data analysis resulted in the development of a local student success model and an implementation model for student services at the subject campus.     

FROM WAC TO MEW TO MET: THE EVOLUTION OF A MORE EFFECTIVE TEACHING PROGRAM

In three years, Stetson University's More Effective Teaching Program (MET) has evolved from a writing‐across‐the‐curriculum faculty development program into a voluntary collaborative learning and teaching project. Based originally on the pedagogy associated with “writing‐to‐learn,” it contains five components that have been designed and adapted to enhance the university as a community of learning and teaching. However, what MET is does not seem as important as the way it has evolved and remained vital. A faculty committee established and maintained MET by using positive wording, tone, and attitudes; by utilizing existing research and assessment efforts to institute each successive program; and by insisting that all elements be conducted as grassroots faculty efforts. As well establishing a diversity of effective faculty development programs, Stetson University has benefited from MET because it has created expectations for the evolution and the improvement of on‐going programs.

Streams of shared knowledge: computational expansion of knowledge-flow theory

In this article, we investigate empirically the theoretical split between emphases upon specialist vs trans-specialist knowledge in the organization – or more generally between exploitation and exploration – a split that divides knowledge-flow theory at present, and hence represents an important issue for knowledge management (KM). We review the relevant literature, articulate hypotheses, and employ computational experimentation to test them empirically. Our findings provide novel, insightful understanding of the factors that contribute toward understanding the relative balance between specialist vs trans-specialist knowledge in particular, and exploitation vs exploration more generally. We offer three main contributions: (1) we critique extant theory relating to the substitutability of specialist and interspecialist knowledge; (2) we offer new conceptual insight and empirical evidence concerning substitutability of these knowledge types in the organization; and (3) we demonstrate the empirical power of computational experimentation to examine KM questions of both theoretical and practical interest.
