Fieldwork is assumed by most practitioners to be an important if not essential component of a degree level education in the
environmental sciences. However, there is strong evidence that as a result of a wide range of pressures (academic, financial
and societal) fieldwork is in decline in the UK and elsewhere. In this paper we discuss the value of fieldwork in a higher
education context and present the results of a case study which illustrates its value to student learning and the wider student
experience. We used qualitative and quantitative methods to compare the impact of two learning tasks upon the affective and
cognitive domains of students. We designed two tasks. One task that included fieldwork, and required students to collect organisms
from the field and make labelled drawings of them, and one task that omitted the fieldwork and simply required drawing of
specimens that the students had not collected. We evaluated the students’ experience through structured and semi-structured
questionnaires and written exercises. Students did not perceive the two tasks as being equivalent to one another. They reported
that they enjoy fieldwork and value it (in the contexts of their learning at university, life-long learning, and in relation
to their career aspirations) and felt that they learn more effectively in the field. Our students were better able to construct
a taxonomic list of organisms that they had collected themselves, better able to recall the structural detail of these organisms
and were better able to recall the detail of an ecological sampling methodology that they had personally carried out in the
field rather than one that a tutor had described to them in a classroom setting. Our case study supports the growing body
of evidence that fieldwork is an important way of enhancing undergraduate learning and highlights some key areas for future

THERE IS LIMITED INFORMATION on how communication barriers impact on the health of deaf individuals. The present article describes the development of a standardized interview tool to collect health-related information from deaf adults via face-to-face interviews in American Sign Language (ASL). Questions were selected largely from existing standardized questionnaires. Key steps in standardizing the instrument included the creation of an ASL gloss version of the survey and extensive interviewer training. The instrument was pilot-tested and revised prior to implementation. There were 139 questions on the final instrument. A total of 203 interviews were conducted between November 2002 and March 2003. A standardized interview survey administered in ASL proved an effective and well-accepted means of collecting health-related information from a diverse sample of deaf individuals. Several challenges were encountered throughout the process, and the resulting lessons will be useful to future research efforts. 相似文献

Curriculum, while often narrowly defined, is a contested space that stimulates continuing international debate, yet the importance of curriculum studies is frequently overlooked across the continuum of teacher education. Within the Irish context a technicist interpretation of curriculum studies, focusing primarily of subject knowledge and development, has historically been adopted. More recent Teaching Council of Ireland policy documents have espoused a broader macro understanding of curriculum studies as a foundation discipline within initial teacher education. However, concerns have been raised regarding student teachers’ ability to fully engage with such material so early in their professional development. With the recently embraced continuum of teacher education in Ireland, this paper examines how curriculum studies is currently defined by Irish policy and problematises how it is addressed in practice. The paper proceeds to explore emerging opportunities to expand this area of study across the continuum. A case for the place of curriculum studies as central to the advancement of the profession through the promotion of teachers as change agents is presented. 相似文献

This study tested assumptions of a servocontrol model of test item feedback. High school students responded to multiple-choice items and rated their certainty of correctness in each response. Next, learners either received feedback on the items or responded again to the same test. The same items were tested again after 1 and 8 days, with the order to alternatives randomized for half of the subjects in each feedback group. The results generally supported the control model and suggest that response certitude estimates can be treated as an index of comprehension. 相似文献

Recently, scholars have sought to learn more about scholarly activity within the fields of criminology and criminal justice (CCJ). Research in this area has examined which departments have the most productive faculty, which scholars are the most productive, and which journals are the most prestigious. However, no study of which we are aware has determined what journals criminologists are most likely to cite in their scholarly research. In this study, we rank the most influential journals by the number of times those journals were cited between 2009 and 2013 in Criminology, the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, and Justice Quarterly. Our analyses suggest that Criminology is clearly the most influential CCJ journal in terms of citations, while the American Sociological Review, the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, and the American Journal of Sociology remain influential in CCJ as well. 相似文献

This article presents a theoretically grounded model of motivation and self-regulation that places personally valued future goals at its core. We attempt to integrate two lines of theorizing and research that have been relatively independent of one another: the social–cognitive perspective on self-regulation (e.g., Bandura, A., 1986) and theories of more future-oriented self-regulation (e.g., Markus, H., and Nurius, P., Am. Psychol. 41: 954–969, 1986; 1986; Nutin, J., Motivation, Planning, and Action: A Relational Theory of Behavior Dynamics, Erlbaum, Hillsdale, NJ, 1984; Raynor, J. O., Motivation and Achievement, Winston, & Sons, New York, Chap. 7, pp. 121–154, 1974). We argue that personally valued future goals influence proximal self-regulation through their impact in the development of proximal subgoals leading to future goal attainment. The development of a system of proximal subgoals increases the likelihood that proximal tasks are perceived as instrumental to attaining future goals. Proximal tasks that are perceived as instrumental to reaching personally valued future goals have greater overall incentive value and meaning than proximal tasks lacking this instrumental relationship, and their impact on task engagement is correspondingly greater. Research supporting these claims is reviewed and the implications of this model of future-oriented self-regulation for research and intervention are discussed. 相似文献

Students with or without expertise in the domain of investments were tested on recall of a list of words containing both investment terms and other terms not related to the domain of investment. Consistent with predictions derived from the expert memory literature, the memory illusion literature, and the ascribed characteristics of implicit associative responses, experts recalled more investment-related words and, paradoxically, also made more false recalls in that domain. This pattern of results paralleled the pattern of differences between another sample of experts and novices in strength of word associations in the two domains. 相似文献
