This paper describes some of the issues surrounding the development of tolerance in young children, including the need to recognise that children's moral development is closely tied to their cognitive development. The importance of the family and other adult models is recognised as children make progress in understanding the views and rights of others. Teaching the young child about tolerance should be embedded in an inclusive approach to curriculum and children given opportunities to make decisions and take responsibility for their own actions consistent with their evolving capabilities. 相似文献

This paper reports research that focuses on student teachers' reflections on their learning process in a collaborative problem-solving context. One group of students with limited mathematical backgrounds worked on two problems in geometry without teacher intervention. We focus on two episodes from the group dialogues. In the first episode (section 5) the students basically reflect on two key issues. The first reflection is related to the concern of making problem-solving tasks too difficult in general while the second reflection has to do with the concern of participation in the solution process. The students discuss how they can give hints or introduce particular ideas before presenting a solution in order to stimulate colleague participation, thus promoting the understanding of the solution process. The second episode (section 6) illustrates the reflection of students on their preparation as future teachers of mathematics. They emphasise that the experience of getting stuck with a problem may help them to better understand the frustration pupils experience while working on unfamiliar problems in classroom. Based on the experience of getting stuck, the students reflect on how they could motivate themselves as well as pupils to work on mathematical problems. They suggest that a good strategy is to start working on an easier problem. If they succeed in coming up with a solution to that problem, they think that it is then more stimulating to proceed to a difficult one. 相似文献

Consistent results of two experiments with relatively technical, native language vocabulary, showed that effectiveness of
keyword methods depended upon whether meanings of words to be learned were abstract or concrete and whether comprehension
was assessed immediately or after a delay. Keywords bearing acoustical similarities to vocabulary items whose meanings were
presented as sentences consistently facilitated students’ retention of the meanings of concrete items on immediate posttests.
However, in contrast to recent research on foreign language vocabulary having simpler definitions, these experiments showed
that it may be difficult to use the keyword method to aid long-term retention with moderately complex. abstract, native language
vocabulary.

The paper describes a project for Liverpool John Moores University PGCE Art and Design students in which they carried out practical research into comics and graphic novels as part of their preparation for teaching. The students were encouraged to investigate the history of the genre, its formal properties as well as its potential as a vehicle for social realism. The practical task was to prepare a single comic book page design, in the course of which they explored a range of possibilities from imaginative children's stories to serious issues such as illness and abuse. They took the opportunity to investigate the potential of this sequential medium to construct narratives using devices such as sequence, repetition and multiple perspectives as well as the juxtapositions of image and text. Administrative growth and administrative expenditures are major issues for institutions of higher education. This paper reports
on a study of administrative costs and structures at lowa State University. Various indicators of administrative efficiency
are examined, including those related to administrative structures, administrative costs, administrative salaries, and administrative
intensity. For each of these aspects, the paper describes the methodology used, summarizes the findings, and provides comparisons
to peer institutions when these are available. Conclusions and plans, for the ongoing examination of administrative costs
and structures at lowa State University are presented. The final section discusses the adaptability of the methodologies used
in this study to studies that could be conducted by other institutions of higher education.

Multimedia computer programmes have been found to facilitate learning in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). However, the effectiveness of these resources is limited due to poor design or a lack of consideration of the ASD cognitive profile, particularly at the lower functioning end of the spectrum. This article attempts to tackle the problem of the lack of design guidelines, with the aim of facilitating the development of effective educational programmes for children with severe ASD. The case study reported here evaluated two literacy educational computer programmes, by observing five low-functioning children with ASD, compared to five neurotypical children (control cases). The two types of reading-support software contrasted in the study presented different characteristics. The children’s data analysed here concern observations of child–software interactive sessions based on video recordings and coded for attention deployment to each programme, including motivation and engagement indicators. 相似文献

Objective: With the rapid rise of sexual abuse allegations, there is a growing need to develop instruments to help clinicians determine the likelihood that sexual abuse has occurred.Method: This study evaluated the discriminant validity of a structured parent interview regarding emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms by comparing results among three subsamples of age matched boys: 22 sexually abused boys whose perpetrator confessed, 47 boys evaluated in a sexual abuse clinic but without a history of perpetrator confession and 52 nonabused boys selected after rigorous screening.Results: In comparison with the nonabused (NA) boys, the sexually abused boys were significantly more likely to demonstrate sudden emotional and behavioral changes, frequent stomachaches, more knowledge about sex and sexual activities than expected for age, unusual agressiveness toward playmate or toy's private parts, crying easily, difficulty getting to sleep, and a change to poor school performance. The internal reliability of the SASA was determined to be .83 and scoring of an abbreviated 12-item scale demonstrated a sensitivity of 90.9% and a specificity of 88.5%.Conclusions: The findings suggest that Structured Interview of Symptoms Associated with Sexual Abuse (SASA) is an effective tool which may help in the comprehensive assessment of boys who may have been sexually abused. 相似文献

Identifying individuals with mathematical difficulties (MD) is becoming increasingly important in our education system. However, recognising MD is only the first stage in the provision of special educational needs (SEN). Although planning the effective remedial support is vital, there is little consensus on the interventions that are appropriate. There are two main reasons for this: first, MD has a variety of manifestations which appear to change with age; and second, there are many potential causes for the difficulties individuals experience. This paper addresses these issues by reviewing research evidence from three 'domains' of psychological research (genetic, cognitive, behavioural), all of which appear to offer insights into potential influences on mathematical ability. 相似文献
