Lift Every Voice and Sing: Faculty of Color Face the Challenges of the Tenure Track

This article highlights some of the obstacles facing tenure-track faculty of color in academia. Through the perspective of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and by using a counterstories method, four faculty of color share their experiences as they explore diversity issues through engaging in a 1-year self-study. Findings of this qualitative study provide important insights from the perspectives of faculty of color to address ways in which to identify supports that lever barriers during the tenure process.

The Spiral of Violence: Equity of Violent Reprisal in Professional Wrestling and its Dispositional and Motivational Features

Though lacking empirical evidence, professional wrestling has been criticized for portraying excessive violence in harmful contexts. This study focused on the equity of violent reprisal perpetrated by liked versus disliked protagonists with socially sanctioned or unsanctioned motives. Results of a quantitative content analysis show that most violent interaction sequences were over-retributive. Violence that was not part of match competition was routinely initiated for normatively unsanctioned motives and showed predominant patterns of escalating violent retribution. These patterns held across perpetrator disposition. Thus, liked characters regularly aggressed for normatively unacceptable reasons. The consequences of these portrayals are discussed.     

Measuring Young People's Citizenship Competences

Citizenship has recently been introduced into the educational curriculum. Instruments to determine the effects of citizenship education are scarce. In this article, the concept of citizenship competences is explored in order to develop a measurement instrument. Four social tasks were derived from the literature as representative of young people's citizenship practices: acting democratically, acting in a socially responsible manner, dealing with conflicts, and dealing with differences. What adequate fulfilment of each social task presupposes in terms of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and reflection is defined per task and operationalised into items for a questionnaire. The sample (N = 16,000) concerns a representative sample of students in grade 6 and grade 9. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to determine the extent to which the structure in the data corresponded to the structure expected on theoretical grounds. The study reveals a reliable and valid instrument for the measurement of young people's citizenship competences. Future research should provide insight into how these competences relate to citizenship behaviour and whether measures of citizenship competences and behaviour will help schools to evaluate the effectiveness of their efforts.     

An Architecture for Case-based Learning

We report on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a case-based instructional environment designed for learning network engineering skills for cybersecurity. We describe the societal problem addressed, the theory-based solution, and the preliminary testing and evaluation of that solution. We identify an architecture for scaffolding case-based learning for problem-solving to inform design of case-based learning environments.

Taking care of kids: A director's concerns about environmental hazards

Pesticides. Environmental tobacco smoke. Lead. Toxic art materials. Asbestos. Every day news reports highlight the newfound dangers of these and other substances. Our commitment to the children we serve makes their health and safety a priority when it comes to these environmental hazards. But others may not have a similar view.     

Centre of mass kinematics of fast bowling in cricket

Kinematic studies have shown that fast bowlers have run-up velocities, based on centre of mass velocity calculations, which are comparable to elite javelin throwers. In this study, 34 fast bowlers (22.3 ± 3.7 years) of premier grade level and above were tested using a three-dimensional (3-D) motion analysis system (240 Hz). Bowlers were divided into four speed groups: slow-medium, medium, medium-fast, and fast. The mean centre of mass velocity at back foot contact (run-up speed) was 5.3 ± 0.6 m/s. Centre of mass velocity at back foot contact was significantly faster in the fastest two bowling groups compared to the slow-medium bowling group. In addition, stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the centre of mass deceleration over the delivery stride phase was the strongest predictor of ball speed in the faster bowling groups. In conclusion, centre of mass kinematics are an important determinant of ball speed generation in fast bowlers. In particular, bowlers able to coordinate their bowling action with periods of centre of mass deceleration may be more likely to generate high ball speed.
