This paper reports on the initial outcomes from the end of the fourth year of a 5 year research and professional development
project to improve chemistry teaching among three cohorts of chemistry teachers in Manitoba, Canada. The project responds
to a new curriculum introduction advocating a tetrahedral orientation (Mahaffy, Journal of Chemical Education 83(1), 49–55,
2006) to the teaching of chemistry. The project in its entirety is based upon several theoretical models in fostering chemistry
teacher development (in particular Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model). These models are described, as is the progress
made by teachers based upon the use of a Chemistry Teacher Inventory and associated teacher responses. Overall, statistical
analysis of perceptions of their own teaching and comments made by teachers suggests they are showing limited development
towards a tetrahedral orientation, albeit in a manner consistent with the curriculum. Ongoing research-based activities in

This article considers the relationship between education, conflict, and peacebuilding in Rwanda. First, it examines the role
that education played in the lead-up to the 1994 genocide, discussing whether and how the low levels of educational attainment,
inequalities of access, curricular content, and teaching methods contributed to the conditions for violence. It then looks
at approaches to rebuilding the education sector since 1994. Despite significant progress, for example in widening access
and achieving gender parity at primary level, three significant challenges remain. First, educational opportunity continues
to be unequal in the post-primary sector, with disparities of access between rich and poor, a severe lack of alternative and
non-formal educational opportunities, and some ethnic dimensions to the disparities. Second, tensions remain over history
teaching due to government attempts to impose a single “official” narrative of Rwanda’s history. Finally, teaching methods
remain largely teacher-centred, with little open debate and teaching of critical thinking skills. The article cautions that,
despite progress, some dimensions of Rwanda’s current education policy and practice may continue to exacerbate tensions. It
concludes by outlining some future priorities and urges the Rwandan government and its international development partners
to more rigorously assess the potential impact of education policies on fragile social relations, and to embrace opportunities
for education to play a more central role in peacebuilding in Rwanda. 相似文献

Toward alternative metrics of journal impact: A comparison of download and citation data 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We generated networks of journal relationships from citation and download data, and determined journal impact rankings from these networks using a set of social network centrality metrics. The resulting journal impact rankings were compared to the ISI IF. Results indicate that, although social network metrics and ISI IF rankings deviate moderately for citation-based journal networks, they differ considerably for journal networks derived from download data. We believe the results represent a unique aspect of general journal impact that is not captured by the ISI IF. These results furthermore raise questions regarding the validity of the ISI IF as the sole assessment of journal impact, and suggest the possibility of devising impact metrics based on usage information in general. 相似文献

Rats (Rattus norvegicus) that received a taste cue (saccharin, saline, quinine, or sucrose) paired with a lithium chloride (LiCl) injection displayed
a robust decrease in consumption of that taste, relative to controls that had the taste unpaired with LiCl. Consumption of
the paired taste increased with each nonreinforced presentation (i.e., extinction). After asymptotic extinction, rats that
had had a 0.1% saccharin cue paired with LiCl consumed less of the saccharin solution than did controls. A similar data pattern
was observed with a 10% sucrose solution. These results are consistent with the view that some aspect of the excitatory CS-US
association remains after extinction. On the other hand, rats that had a bitter (0.005% or 0.001% quinine) or salty (1% or
0.5% saline) solution paired with LiCl drank similar amounts of the fluid as controls after asymptotic extinction treatment.
Together, these experiments suggest that a taste that is either sweet or preferred is required in order to demonstrate the
chronic decrease in fluid consumption after extinction treatment. The data suggest that the conditioning experience prevents
the later development of a preference for the sweet taste, rather than there being a retained aversion that suppresses fluid

PL 94-142 mandates that students who are seriously emotionally disturbed be provided with a free and appropriate public education. Embedded in the federal definition of serious emotional disturbance is a clause that excludes socially maladjusted students from the diagnostic category. Although socially maladjusted children may therefore not receive special education services, their presence in the schools may have implications for society and particularly for the educational system. However, there is little data concerning the prevalence of socially maladjusted students in the schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of social maladjustment in two rural/suburban school systems in the southeastern United States. Results of the study indicate that the percentage of students reported as exhibiting characteristics of social maladjustment is sufficiently high to indicate that services beyond special education may be necessary to meet their educational and social needs. 相似文献

Participants in the sport of snow skiing devote considerable effort to reduce sliding friction of the ski. A large industry is devoted to providing products and ski preparation methods with claims of improved ski performance, sometimes at considerable expense. Despite this attention to the topic, there are very little data available to skiers that quantify the effect these products and methods have on reducing ski friction. Determining the coefficient of friction of a ski on snow presents a significant technical challenge. Our approach has been to develop a tribometer incorporating a series of proximity sensors to test commercially available ski equipment and waxes on natural snow. We developed a test protocol that significantly reduces the experimental noise associated with variable environmental conditions enabling us to differentiate the difference in friction between two pairs of skis with a resolution of 0.001. A large body of test data was acquired over a wide range of environmental conditions to quantify the effect of ski wax and base texturing treatments in terms of coefficient of friction in a way that is of practical use to skiers.
