The temporal processing capabilities of 15 children with dyslexia versus 15 age-matched and 15 reading-matched controls in a word identification task were examined. The hypothesis underlying the present experiment was that word recognition would be inferior in children with dyslexia, relative to controls, when the task demanded the temporal integration (sequencing) of two-syllable words. Such a hypothesis must predict that one-syllable word recognition does not distinguish between these two populations and that these effects cannot be accounted for in terms of eye movement differences. To test this hypothesis, one- and two-syllable words displayed for 100, 300, and 3,000 msec were required to be identified. The results yielded evidence of decreased accuracy of word identification by the children with dyslexia in the two-syllable, 300-msec condition, as predicted. A second experiment was unable to uncover any differences in eye movement behaviors that could account for the effects observed in the first experiment. The first part of the article provides a historical account of the broad phases of development that educational television has passed through as a result of social and technological influences:
its beginnings in broadcasting in the fifties and sixties;
its development through the video age in the seventies and eighties, with widening scope and opportunity as a result of developments in production and reception/recording equipment and an expansion of communication channels;
its present potential, at the dawn of the interactive age, as a result of the influences of new technology.
The article then examines the problems of integrating new television‐related technologies into the educational system and draws attention to:
the frequent past failures of the educational system to fully exploit new technologies, resulting in superficial integration and ineffectual use;
the current tensions between the traditional educational technology approach and the drives behind much new technology;
the need for appropriate systems and structures to ensure that the evaluation of such new technologies is properly resourced and effectively carried out.
Using a Black Feminist Thought framework, this phenomenological study focused on lived experiences with mentoring relationships among 38 Black women in doctoral programs in multiple disciplines across universities in the United States. Although emerging studies on Black women in academia acknowledge the significance of mentorship and the reality of discrimination at the intersection of race and gender, the literature lacks empirical support pertaining to the formation and outcomes of mentoring relationships, specifically for Black women in doctoral education. Findings from this study suggested four central themes in the mentoring relationships among Black women in doctoral programs: (a) organic evolvement, (b) shared identity/mutual interest, (c) personal transformation and (d) increase in access and opportunity. Implications for future research, policy, practice and education across disciplines are offered. 相似文献
Five pigeons pecked lighted keys for food reinforcers delivered by several multiple variable interval 2-min variable interval 2-min schedules. At different times, the components of the multiple schedule both supplied food reinforcers, both supplied water, or one supplied food and the other supplied water. Rates of responding during the water component of the food-water schedule were lower than the rates during comparable components of the water-water schedules (negative contrast). But, the rates of responding during the food component of the food-water schedule were not greater than the rates of responding during comparable components of the food-food schedules (absence of positive contrast) at two different levels of water deprivation. These results raise questions about several theories of behavioral contrast, and they may restrict the scope of any theory that attributes positive and negative contrast to symmetrical factors. 相似文献
The roles of person familiarity and parental involvement in 3.5-month-old infants' sensitivity to the dynamic emotion expressions of others were explored. In the home, parental facial/vocal expressions (happy, sad, angry) were videotaped, and measures of parent-infant involvement were obtained. In the laboratory, 32 infants alternately viewed their mother and father and an unfamiliar woman and man portraying expressions in an intermodal preference task. Infants looked differentially at mothers' expressions but not at those of fathers or unfamiliar adults. Examination of parent-child involvement patterns revealed significant relations with infants' sensitivity to expressions. Results suggest that person familiarity may facilitate infants' developing understanding of others' emotion expressions, and that individual differences in family dynamics may be relevant to infants' patterns of responding. 相似文献
Rejection, deprivation, physical pain, and an unpredictable environment are the primary determinants in the maladjustment of the abused child from infancy through adolescence.It is our conclusion that the majority of adolescents with character and personality disorders, particularly as manifested in the BORDERLINE SYNDROME, will have been subjected repeatedly and consistently to a parenting style incorporating these four determinants.The authors are involved in providing long term In-patient treatment to 40 severely emotionally disturbed adolescents. The vast majority of these youngsters are referred for uncontrollable acting out. Approximately ninety percent of these adolescents under treatment were abused and neglected as children.One of the forty adolescents under treatment will be considered.
