This study investigates the relationship between family background and both college completion and earnings for a cohort of young adults. The study is based on sample of 8901 respondents from the National Education Longitudinal Study who were first surveyed as eighth graders in 1988 and last surveyed 12 years later and who were working and not attending school at the time of the last survey. The study finds that social class background has a powerful effect on college completion. The odds of completing college for a student from a high SES background are more than six times higher than for a student from a lower social class background, even when controlling for other predictors such as test scores, grades, and college expectations. The effect of social class background on young adult earnings is more modest, but consistent with other studies. In both cases, the relationship varies widely among gender and racial and ethnic groups. 相似文献

In two experiments, participants acquired one of two target configural discriminations (a biconditional or negative patterning
discrimination) in a predictive learning task. In Experiment 1, participants were pretrained with either a configural or an
elemental discrimination; in Experiment 2, they were pretrained with a configural discrimination, an elemental discrimination,
or a control discrimination that was not expected to bias them toward elemental or configural processing. In both experiments,
acquisition of the target configural discriminations was faster after configural pretraining than after elemental pretraining.
In addition, the negative patterning discrimination was acquired faster than the biconditional discrimination. Finally, the
results of Experiment 2 were more consistent with the notion that elemental pretraining hindered acquisition of the target
discriminations than with the notion that configural pretraining enhanced their acquisition. Implications of these findings

The twofold purposes of the investigation were (a) to describe with direct observation data the physical activity behaviors and the accompanying social and environmental events of those behaviors for children in preschools and (b) to determine which contextual conditions were predictors of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and nonsedentary physical activity (i.e., light activity + MVPA) for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children during their outdoor play. The results indicate that preschoolers' physical activity is characterized as sedentary in nature throughout their preschool day (i.e., 89% sedentary, 8% light activity, and 3% MVPA). During outdoor play periods, when children are most likely to be physically active, some contextual and social circumstances better predict their physical activity. The many developments in science and technology that will take place in the next decade will call for a greatly expanded technical manpower team, and the largest potential source of 1957. supply is the manpower pool composed of individuals with aptitudes that qualify them to become engineering technicians.
