Most research on admissions criteria has shown that academic admissions variables are generally not related to counseling skills before, during, or after training. On the other hand, substantial research has demonstrated a good predictive relationship between some nonintellective variables and counseling skills and performance. An admissions model was developed in the Department of Counselor Education at Boston University that included standardized intellective and nonintellective variables. The admissions “scores” of three groups of subjects were tested against levels of performance on a tape-test of three counseling skills. It was found that linear combinations of grade point average, quality of undergraduate college, major area of study, and recommendations and work experience were generally unrelated to pre- or posttraining ratings of empathy, respect, and genuineness. New variables based on Carkhuff's Counseling Simulation Inventory were added to the admissions equation and significantly raised the predictive power of the admissions score. An eight-item instrument was constructed to measure the skills represented by four of Carkhuff's dimensions (scales) of facilitative interpersonal functioning. These items consisted of stimulus statements on a color videocassette, introduced by a narrator and performed by actors. Subjects responded by writing what their verbal and nonverbal responses would be in the situation presented. Reliability coefficients (.77 and .80), concurrent validity (.75) and construct validity via factor analysis are presented. The purpose of this audiovisual counseling study was to determine if variations in counselor nonverbal behavior result in enhanced or debilitated perceptions of counselor expertness, attractiveness, trustworthiness, and helpfulness. Three groups of participants rated the perceived expertness, attractiveness, trustworthiness, and helpfulness of a counselor emitting nonverbal behavior at a high, moderate, or low frequency. In addition, a fourth group rated the perceived expertness, attractiveness, trustworthiness, and helpfulness of the counselor role. Results indicate that: (a) low frequency counselor nonverbal behavior results in debilitated perceptions of counselors; (b) the counselor role is perceived as moderately expert, attractive, trustworthy, and helpful; and (c) compared with the counselor role, high frequency counselor nonverbal behavior does not enhance the perceived expertness, attractiveness, trustworthiness, and helpfulness of counselors. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of subject drop-out on a multi-stage shuttle run test and a modified incremental shuttle run test in which speed was increased by 0.014m.s-1 every 20-m shuttle to avoid the need for verbal speed cues. Analysis of the multi-stage shuttle run test with 208 elite female netball players and 381 elite male lacrosse players found that 13 (+/-3) players stopped after the first shuttle of each new level, in comparison with 5 (+/-2) players on any other shuttle. No obvious drop-out pattern was observed on the incremental shuttle run test with 273 male and 79 female undergraduate students. The mean difference between a test-retest condition (n= 20) for peak shuttle running speed (-0.03+/- 0.01m.s-1) and maximal heart rate (0.4+/- 0.1 beats.min-1) on the incremental test showed no bias (P > 0.05). The 95% absolute confidence limits of agreement were 0.11m.s-1 for peak shuttle running speed and +/-5 beats.min-1 for maximal heart rate. The relationship (n= 27) between peak shuttle running speed on the incremental shuttle run test (4.22+/- 0.14m.s-1) and VO2max (59.0+/- 1.7ml.kg-1.min-1) was r=0.91 (P< 0.01), with a standard error of prediction of 2.6ml.kg-1.min-1. These results suggest verbal cues during the multi-stage shuttle run test may influence subject drop-out. The effect of research article length, format, and technical quality upon practicing counselors' receptivity to research material was examined. A group of 160 school and rehabilitation counselors were selected by a stratified sampling procedure and assigned at random to one of eight treatment conditions. Each of these treatments represented a combination of predictor variables. Subject ratings of the research articles were analyzed using a least squares analysis of variance procedure. Contrary to much of the available literature, it was found that none of the predictor variables significantly affected scores of counselor receptivity in any consistent direction or between articles of different content. 相似文献
