A pilot project of a cancer patient library in Italy: results of a customer-satisfaction survey and its products

AIMS: The purpose of this study is to determine the degree of satisfaction of users of the Cancer Information Point section of the Library for Patients (CIP-LP), active since 1998 at the National Cancer Institute of Aviano, Italy. The CIP-LP is based on a skilled intermediary, adequate informative material and a specific location, within the Scientific Library of the Institute. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A survey was developed to assess service functionality and quality from the users' viewpoint. During a 6-month period, a questionnaire was mailed to 194 patients and relatives who previously used the CIP-LP; 113 (58%) were returned and processed. RESULTS: Of the respondents, 91% were pleased with the CIP-LP and 95% would recommend the service to other people. The information obtained contributed to a clearer understanding of the illness and treatment (45% as first answer) and a better control of the situation (33%). Fifty-one per cent evaluated the information received as 'good', 42%'excellent' and 4%'of sufficient quality'. CONCLUSION: This survey shows the appreciation and usefulness in the users' perception of a specific hospital library for cancer patients and their relatives, providing an information service supplementary to doctor-patient communication.     

Understanding teachers’ routines to inform classroom technology design

Secondary school teachers have quite busy and complex routines in their classrooms. However, present classroom technologies usually require focused attention from teachers while being interacted with, which restricts their use in teachers’ daily routines. Peripheral interaction is a human-computer interaction style that aims to enable interaction to take place both in the center and periphery of users’ attention and naturally shift between the two. We believe that classroom technologies employing the principles of peripheral interaction can reduce attentional resources required for teachers to interact with the technologies, and thus make technologies seamlessly blend into teachers’ routines. In order to design such technologies, a thorough understanding of users’ existing routines is crucial. In this paper, we present a qualitative study on everyday routines of seven Dutch secondary school teachers using contextmapping methodology. The results of two qualitative content analyses reveal an overview of teachers’ routine tasks in their classrooms, as well as rich and vivid contextual information about how teachers allocated their attention in their routines and how teachers experience their routines. Based on these findings, we present opportunities and considerations that may inform the design and development of classroom technologies which are to become part of teachers’ routines.

Relating students' reasoning to the history of science: The case of chemical equilibrium

In this study, the reasoning of students, who are introduced to the concept of chemical equilibrium, was related to the historical development of this concept. In the first stage of the study, remarkable similarities were observed between students' reasoning on the issue of incomplete chemical conversions and the reasoning of 19th-century scientists, especially when molecular notions were included. In the next stage of the study, some authentic problems and questions, that were essential in the historical development of chemical equilibrium, were presented to students. It appeared that they recognised the significance of these problems and questions. Moreover, most students were eager to find explanations. Students, reasoning in molecular terms, would sometimes explain these problems in terms similar to historical explanations. Other students, however, suggested explanations in non-molecular terms, which, although chemically valid, did not appear to have historical antecedents. It was concluded that the study of authentic historical sources may inspire the design of effective teaching activities.

本文对中国科学技术信息研究所情报教育,特别是情报学研究生教育进行了回顾、总结和展望.同时也对中国情报学研究生教育事业30年来的发展做了简要回顾和思考.     

高等医药院校体育师资队伍现状调查结果分析

运用调查法、访谈法、文献资料法、数理统计等研究方法 ,对全国 5 3所高等医药院校的 70 4名体育教师现状进行分析研究。其结果显示思想政治素质、业务素质较好、队伍稳定 ;但学历结构、职称结构、年龄结构、性别结构不尽合理 ,工作环境较差。提出加强师资队伍薄弱环节建设的思路和建议 ,为领导决策提供依据 ,旨在建设一支跨世纪的体育名师队伍 ,以适应全面推进素质教育 ,培养高水平的医药专业人才的需要。
