The research university is a central institution of the twenty-first century—providing access to global science, producing
basic and applied research, and educating leaders of the academe and society. Worldwide, there are very few research universities—they
are expensive to develop and support, and the pressures of massification have placed priorities elsewhere. For developing
countries, research universities are especially rare, and yet they are especially important as key ingredients for economic
and social progress. This article argues for the importance of research universities in developing and middle-income countries

China and India together account for almost 25% of the world’s postsecondary student population. Most of the enrolment growth
in the coming several decades will be in developing countries, and China and India will contribute a significant proportion
of that expansion, since China currently educates only about 20% and India 10% of the age cohort. Both countries are expanding
the higher education sector, while at the same time seeking to improve its quality. Challenges of funding, educating qualified
academics, and building a sustainable academic culture are significant. An emerging private higher education sector and developing
masters and doctoral programmes are additional pressures. Internationalization is a key factor as well, as both countries
seek to expand their global profile and develop strategies for international programmes. Also, higher education development

To investigate the influence of an innovative math fluency intervention, 36 middle‐school students were randomly assigned to either an experimental (the Detect, Practice, Repair [DPR]) or control condition (reading intervention). After covarying pretest scores, the DPR treatment produced a significantly higher (p = .016) adjusted mean (M) math score (M = 47.53, standard deviation [SD] = 3.26) for the intervention group when compared to the control group (M = 33.31, SD = 4.39). This paper presents a case study of implementation of a new system of faculty teaching evaluation at a graduate school of
business in Thailand. The research employed a non-experimental, longitudinal case study design in the analysis of student
course evaluation data gathered over a period of 21 terms during a seven-year period. The report describes the design of the
performance and reward system and its role in the college’s quality improvement program. Quantitative data analysis focused
on results related to both instructor performance and faculty turnover. The data suggest statistically significant improvement
in levels of instructor effectiveness and faculty turnover in the college over the seven-year period. While the research is
subject to the contextual limitations of case studies, it also demonstrates the possibilities and problems of employing performance

Over the past few decades, America’s social compact for higher education as a public good has effectively lapsed as government
support of higher education has diminished. Given the need for a highly educated workforce in today’s knowledge-based global
economy, we propose a new compact for higher education that couples increased funding with increased institutional accountability.
While the compact must retain academic freedom as an essential component of higher education, this autonomy must co-exist
with rigorous accountability standards. Accountability systems should be multifaceted, as different methodologies have differing
strengths and limitations. All systems should, however, inform the public and provide for institutional improvement. 相似文献

This article shares research facilitated by a multinational technology provider, converging mobile networked technology (tablets) used across school and home, a technology enhanced community ‘third space’ providing workshops for students aged 6–9 with their parents/carers. The approach taken avoids the instrumental measurement of functional digital literacy competences, but instead seeks to negotiate a more nuanced and complex understanding of the ‘uses of literacy’ [from Hoggart, R. 1957. Consecutive proximal-to-distal sequencing of motion is considered to be integral for generating high velocity of distal segments in many sports. Simultaneous usage of proximal and distal segments as seen in martial arts is by far less well investigated. Therefore, the aim of the study was to characterise and differentiate the concepts of consecutive (CSM) and simultaneous (SSM) sequence of motion in straight reverse punches as practised in Practical Wing Chun. Four experienced martial artists succeeded an eligibility test for technical proficiency in both concepts and performed a total number of 20 straight punches per concept. Eight MX13 Vicon cameras (250 fps) and Visual3D were used for motion capture and analyses. Both motion concepts showed proximal-to-distal sequencing of maximal joint velocities but, in SSM, this was coupled with simultaneous initiation. Key characteristics were: high pelvis momentum and backswing of shoulder and elbow (CSM); and importance of shoulder involvement (SSM). Different ranges of motion, timing aspects and achieved maximal angular velocities distinguished both concepts, which led to differences (p < 0.05) in fist velocity at contact, execution time, distance and horizontal shift of the centre of mass. The knee is one of the most frequently injured joints of the human body with injuries affecting the general population and the athletic population of many age groups. Dissection procedures for the knee joint typically do not allow unobstructed visualization of the anterior cruciate or posterior cruciate ligaments without sacrificing the collateral ligaments. In many cases, the relationships of the intraarticular structures are lost as dissection systematically removes superficial structures to gain access to deeper structures. The authors present an alternative technique for dissection of the human knee joint that allows maximal visualization of intraarticular structures such as the cruciate ligaments and menisci with minimal disturbance to the tibial and fibular collateral ligaments, thus preserving the relationships of the ligamentous and intraarticular structures. Traditional methods of teaching anatomy to undergraduate medical and veterinary students are being challenged and need to adapt to modern concerns and requirements. There is a move away from the use of cadavers to new technologies as a way of complementing the traditional approaches and addressing resource and ethical problems. Haptic (touch) technology, which allows the student to feel a 3D computer‐generated virtual environment, provides a novel way to address some of these challenges. To evaluate the practicalities and usefulness of a haptic simulator, first year veterinary students at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, were taught basic bovine abdominal anatomy using a rectal palpation simulator: “The Haptic Cow.” Over two days, 186 students were taught in small groups and 184 provided feedback via a questionnaire. The results were positive; the majority of students considered that the simulator had been useful for appreciating both the feel and location of key internal anatomical structures, had helped with their understanding of bovine abdominal anatomy and 3D visualization, and the tutorial had been enjoyable. The students were mostly in favor of the small group tutorial format, but some requested more time on the simulator. The findings indicate that the haptic simulator is an engaging way of teaching bovine abdominal anatomy to a large number of students in an efficient manner without using cadavers, thereby addressing some of the current challenges in anatomy teaching.
