ABSTRACT

The student engagement concept has been revolutionised so that students play an active role alongside staff members in determining their student learning experiences. Although the development of student–staff partnerships enhances student engagement and experience, empirical research on partnerships in Malaysia is scant. This paper contributes to the growing scholarly literature on such partnerships – in particular, exploring postgraduate international students and staff members’ partnership dimensions in extra-curricular activities at a research university in Malaysia. This qualitative study interviewed 33 postgraduate international students, 10 academic staff and 12 professional staff members. Based on the findings, the student–staff partnership model is well integrated into the extra-curricular activities: international students are invited to co-design and implement adjustment programmes for newly arrived international students. This paper also explores the multi-layered benefits of partnerships for postgraduate international students and for staff members. The implications of such partnerships for the university, international students and staff members are discussed.  相似文献

Incidental learning of film content was investigated in institutionalized retarded children. In the first of two studies, 40 retardates at six IQ levels, three MA levels, and five CA levels were tested. In the second study, 21 Down's Syndrome, organic, and familial retardates were tested. The stimuli consisted of an 8‐minute film which was shown individually. All subjects were questioned on twenty incidental aspects of the film. In Experiment 1, a curvilinear relationship was found between incidental learning and IQ. Incidental learning improved with MA. A retest, taken 120 hours later, revealed a 10.9 percent loss of incidental learning. Higher IQ children showed the greatest loss. Experiment 2 reported no difference in incidental learning as a function of etiology of retardation. A retest showed a short term memory deficit in organic retardates and a significant loss of incidental learning in Down's Syndrome and familial retardates. Implications of these results were discussed in terms of structured teaching techniques.  相似文献

This paper seeks to extend the range of critical literacy strategies that environmental educators might use in their engagement with curriculum policies. The paper focuses on a recent curriculum and professional development project from Australia as the context to illuminate and explicate particular critical reading strategies. Nychthemeral rhythmicity of urinary copper (Cu) was studied in 40 clinically healthy volunteers and 35 renal stone formers. A marked diurnal rhythm was noticed in urinary Cu levels in healthy subjects with maximum excretion at 0000 to 0600 hr followed by a progressive fall during the rest of the period reaching minimum between 1200 to 1800 hr in males and 0600 to 1200 hr in female volunteers. Similarly, all stone patients exhibited a definite rhythm in urinary Cu with significant amplitude and acrophases at 2145 hr for males and 2141 hr for female stone formers. However, there was no difference in mean 24-hr Cu excretion in male and female stone formers, whereas a significant change was observed in case of healthy subjects. Urinary Cu was found to be significantly increased in renal stone formers in comparison to healthy controls of either sex attributing a significant role of this overlooked trace mineral in the crystallization and/or activation of either of the process of stone formation in the renal tubules.  相似文献

Recent changes in the English curriculum have once again shifted the focus towards more canonical texts, but does featuring such texts on the course necessarily equate to rigorous teaching and in-depth learning?
