Improving Direct‐Care Staff Consistency in a Residential Treatment Program through the Use of Self‐Recording and Feedback

A program for increasing staff effectiveness in implementing a group home behaviour management program was evaluated. The program consisted of self‐recording and supervisor feedback. A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate staff consistency in four skill areas; implementing response cost for the occurrence of physical aggression, implementing response cost for the occurrence of verbal aggression, setting guidelines for successful task completion, and providing feedback to residents. Staff increased consistency in all four areas following intervention. A one week follow‐up demonstrated short‐term maintenance of intervention effects. Results are discussed with reference to future training procedures.     

Cross-cultural confusions amongst diverse colleagues: what teachers’ narratives reveal about intergroup communication

ABSTRACT

Teacher-led initiatives built upon relationships, moral purpose, and a commitment to act have the potential to bring about change in twenty-first century schools. In order to implement and sustain change, teachers must collaborate with diverse colleagues and members of the school community. Intergroup communication across cultural and linguistic divides, though not impossible, is challenging as the data from this study shows. The purpose of the qualitative study was to explore factors that influenced teachers’ thinking, behavior, and interactions as they designed and implemented a dual language education program for English Language Learners. Narrative inquiry though a heuristic lens allowed for the gathering of stories that illustrate the lived realities of the participants. Teachers’ narratives reveal emergent themes regarding cross-cultural confusions amongst colleagues, warranting further study of intergroup communication in schools.     

Are numbers logographs?

Researchers generally assume that logographs such as numerals form a homogeneous set. This paper presents a study whose results challenge that assumption. Using a visual search task, it is shown that native Chinese speakers, who can read and speak English, process strings of Chinese numerals differently from the way they process strings of Western numerals. The different pattern of results found with these two sets of numerals also contrasts with the pattern typically found when native English speakers process Western numerals. An explanation of this result is proposed based on the notion that visual search functions can be the outcome of the combined effect of different basic search procedures.     

Functional Assessment to Predict Capacity for Work in a Population of School‐leavers with Disabilities

This study reports on an assessment system for school‐leavers with disabilities to identify their capacity for work and the type of transition‐to‐work programme best suited to each person. Participants were 1,556 high school students in four cohorts who left school between 1999 and 2002. Each school‐leaver was assessed by rehabilitation counsellors for functional ability and capacity for work. In a supplementary study, the 2002 cohort was assessed by special transition teachers using a short screening tool. The results demonstrate that there is a predictable hierarchy of functional acquisition among school‐leavers with disabilities and that the single best predictor of future capacity for work and need for transition‐to‐work programmes among this group of young people is the capacity to manage activities of daily living. The results also demonstrate that a short screen used by teachers, together with a behavioural assessment, is sufficient to stream school‐leavers with a disability into a range of transition‐to‐work programmes.     

The new Norm

This article examines how one Central Florida newspaper used emerging media technologies to communicate and engage better with a newly active audience during its coverage of two high-profile court trials. Through a series of in-depth interviews with participating journalists, the author demonstrates how the Orlando Sentinel disrupted traditional newsgathering and dissemination methods during reporting of the Casey Anthony and George Zimmerman trials, and in doing so, challenged long-standing gatekeeping media theories and exemplified emerging participatory journalism models. Findings show that audience demands for live and continuous information throughout the development of the Casey Anthony and George Zimmerman stories and resulting court proceedings were a driving force in changing outdated journalism paradigms that led to the adaptation of a new norm by the Orlando Sentinel newsroom and journalists.
