Abstract The effects of breathing 100% oxygen on resting, exercise, and recovery oxygen consumptions, pulmonary ventilation volumes, and heart rates were observed on six highly conditioned male athletes. The subjects rode a bicycle ergometer at a heavy work load for five minutes, breathing either normal air or medical oxygen. Ventilation volumes were determined by the open-circuit Douglas bag method, measuring inspired and expired volumes. Gas samples were analyzed for nitrogen and oxygen concentrations on Van Slyke and Beckman gas analyzers, and heart rates were recorded via a telemetry-electrocardiograph system. The results indicated a substantial increase in resting oxygen consumption, a decrease in resting ventilation volume, a marked decline in exercise and recovery ventilation volumes, and an insignificant lowering of the energy cost of exercise during the oxygen experiments. No appreciable differences were noted in heart rates between the oxygen and air experiments. 相似文献

The article begins with an introduction to the problem of bullying in schools. Next, the relative strengths and weaknesses of some interventions for victims of bullying are discussed. In the second part of this article the reader is introduced to the Social Skills Training Programme that the writers developed. In particular, some of the practicalities of setting up and conducting the groups are mentioned. The content of the sessions, in terms of the skills that were focused on and the techniques that were used, are described. Cross-linguistic studies provide a unique tool for the identification of universal processes in oral and written language, both in development and in breakdown (Annual Review of psychology, 52, 369–396). Examining the differential strengths and weaknesses of children with dyslexia in contrasting orthographies can help illumine both the more universal aspects of reading disabilities, as well as their individual language-specific attributes. The aim of this study, was to investigate the shared and distinctive characteristics of readers with dyslexia on reading and reading fluency across Hebrew and English orthographies. Differences between 60 Hebrew and English-speaking children with dyslexia on a battery of cognitive, linguistic, and reading measures will be discussed along with theoretical implications. 相似文献

Social media are a group of technologies such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn which offer people chances to interact with one another in new ways. Teachers, like other members of society, do not all use social media. Some avoid, some experiment with and others embrace social media enthusiastically. As a means of communication available to everyone in modern society, social media is challenging teachers, as other professionals in society, to decide whether to engage with these tools and, if so, on what basis – as an individual (personally), or as a teacher (professionally). Although teachers are guided by schools and codes of practice, teachers as individuals are left to decide whether and how to explore social media for either their own or their students' learning. This paper analyses evidence from interviews with 12 teachers from England about their use of social media as to the challenges they experience in relation to using the media as professional teachers.. Teachers are in society’s spotlight in terms of examples of inappropriate use of social media but also under peer pressure to connect. This paper explores their agency in responding. The paper focuses on how teachers deal with tensions between their personal and professional use of social media. These tensions are not always perceived as negative and some teachers' accounts revealed a unity in their identities when using social media. The animal kingdom contains species with a wide variety of sensory systems that have been selected to function in different environmental niches, but that are also subject to modification by experience during an organism’s lifetime. The modification of such systems by experience is often called perceptual learning. In rodents, the classic example of perceptual learning is the observation that simple preexposure to two visual stimuli facilitates a subsequent (reinforced) discrimination between them. However, until recently very little behavioral research had investigated perceptual learning with tactile stimuli in rodents, in marked contrast to the wealth of information about plasticity in the rodent somatosensory system.
