The Influences of Faculty on Undergraduate Student Participation in Research and Creative Activities
Using data collected from surveys of college juniors and seniors and faculty members in related academic departments, this
study examined whether faculty teaching and research orientations, as well as faculty external funding, had any impact on
undergraduate student participation in research and creative activities. The results of the study indicated that faculty research
orientation and external funding were indeed positively related to student participation in research activities. However,
faculty members’ teaching orientation was not significant. Further analyses indicated that faculty teaching and research orientations
had different impacts on a range of research and creative activities by undergraduate students. The findings from this study
provide insight on ways of improving college teaching and learning as well as informing the development of institutional academic
policies related to faculty and undergraduate education.

植物学野外实习是生命科学各专业教学的重要组成部分.近几年来,在提前对实习地点的情况进行详细了解的基础上,制定出切实可行的实习计划,实习前进行充分的动员工作.在野外实习过程中,使学生掌握所在地区常见的植物种类、形态特征和识别要点,学会植物标本的采集制作、植物检索表的编制、工具书的熟练使用等专业技能,同时,让学生积极地开展一些小专题调查研究,培养学生初步开展科研工作的能力和创新素质,并将学生的组织管理和宣传教育工作,贯穿于整个实习过程的始终.最后,客观公正地对学生实习成绩进行量化考核.通过已构建的植物学野外实习教学模式体系,能够促进教学任务高质量地完成. 相似文献

Being (Dis)Engaged in Educationally Purposeful Activities: The Influences of Student and Institutional Characteristics 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The self-reported experiences of 50,883 undergraduates at 123 institutions were analyzed using a multinomial hierarchical model to identify individual and institutional characteristics associated with varying levels of student engagement in educationally purposeful activities. Parental education and student academic preparation were positively associated with higher levels of engagement. White students were generally less engaged than students from other racial and ethnic groups whereas men were more likely to be either disengaged or highly engaged compared with women. Students at public institutions and research universities were less engaged than their counterparts at private colleges and other institutional types. Individual student perceptions of certain aspects of the institutional environment affected engagement in complicated ways. 相似文献

Using data from two rounds of surveys on students in the Washington State Achievers (WSA) program, this study examined the
relationship between student engagement in college activities and student persistence in college. Different approaches using
student engagement measures in the persistence models were compared. The results indicated that the relationship between student
engagement and the probability of persisting was not linear. Even though a higher level of social engagement was related to
an increased probability of persisting, a higher level of academic engagement was negatively related to such probability.
The findings have strong implications for educational research, policy, and practice. 相似文献
