DEVELOPING MEDIA LITERACY SKILLS TO CHALLENGE TELEVISION'S PORTRAYAL OF OLDER WOMEN

To be old in our society is to be devalued. To be old and female is to experience double oppression. This article reports on a study that examined how television both reinforces and resists the prevailing images of older women in Western society. Two randomly selected television rerun episodes of The Golden Girls were selected to use as a trigger event with members of a graduate course in Social Work with older adults at a major southeastern university. The study found that television reflects societal discourse about aging by providing unchallenged images of older women and their lives. Given the power of television, educators and gerontologists must teach students to develop critical thinking and media literacy skills that challenge and deconstruct television's images about older women and to advocate for new programming that reflects more accurate and diverse portrayals of older women.     

INFUSING GERONTOLOGICAL CONTENT INTO THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION

The graying of the American population and the importance of religion in the lives of older individuals suggests that members of the clergy need to be well informed regarding the processes and realities of aging. For several years, gerontologists have been encouraging theological educators to place an increased emphasis on the needs and concerns of older adults in seminary curriculum. The purpose of the present study was to determine what seminaries are currently doing to prepare pastors for ministry with older adults and to compare the findings to a similar study undertaken more than a decade ago. The results of the current study are quite similar to those obtained in the past. Although several schools have added a course focusing on the needs and concerns of older adults within the last 20 years, gerontological content remains a minor consideration among the vast majority of seminaries. The major recommendation of the study is that seminaries need to infuse their curricula with gerontological content in order for their graduates to be adequately prepared for ministry in twenty-first century America.     

Progressive form and Mexican culpability in Polk's justification for war

The rhetorical structure of James K. Polk's justification for war with Mexico is analyzed from the perspective of Kenneth Burke's theory of form. Particular attention is given to the president's technique of suggesting Mexican culpability through a progression of forms which contrasts American rationality with Mexican irrationality.     

Teaching Philosophy and Methods of Restorative Care to Assisted Living Owners and Staff

To implement restorative care in assisted living facilities, staff need to understand the philosophy and learn methods to help residents maintain optimal function. In this study, the researchers developed a multimedia training program designed to teach staff how to encourage residents to increase their participation in dressing themselves. Researchers conducted a pilot test to measure the short-term effects of the training on 40 staff from two states. Program effects were measured by completing a survey developed by the researchers. Pretest scores were significantly related to gender (women as a group had higher scores than men). Results indicated significant gains in knowledge at posttest. In addition, 93% of participants described positive changes related to restorative care that they planned to make at their facility as a result of the training.

基于IIG和LSI组合特征提取方法的文本聚类研究

本文利用改进的信息增益特征选择方法和潜在语义索引技术组合的特征提取方法 ,对文本进行了有效的自动聚类。从语料库中抽取了 2 5 0篇文本 ,首先利用向量空间模型和改进的信息增益特征选择方法 ,构造文本特征向量 ,利用C 均值方法聚类 ,聚类结果准确率、查全率、F measure分别达到 0 .82、0 . 88、0 .83。在此基础上 ,对最优的特征选择结果运用潜在语义索引方法 ,对奇异值分解的结果进行截断处理 ,发现奇异值K取 4 0时聚类结果的准确率、查全率、F measure达到 0 . 95、0. 5 7、0 . 78,在有效地降维的同时 ,大幅度地提高了聚类的准确率。
