Investigation of scientists’ actual processes of conducting research can provide us with more realistic aspects of scientific
inquiry. This study was performed to identify three aspects of scientists’ actual research: their motivations for scientific
inquiry, the scientific inquiry skills they used, and the main types of results obtained from their research. To do this,
we interviewed six prominent physicists about why and how they researched and what they obtained from their research results.
We also analyzed their published papers. In the previous part of this study, types and features of the physicists’ research
motivations were identified (Park and Jang, Journal of the Korean Physical Society, 47(3), 401–408, 2005). In this article,
as the second part of the study, it was found: (1) Various inquiry skills including theoretical as well as experimental research
skills and the social skills of scientific inquiry were used in physicists’ research. (2) New inventions, articulation of,
and falsification of the previous findings were regarded as important research results. (3) Physicists’ research processes
were often non-linear and cyclical. For each of these findings, implications for teaching scientific inquiry in schools were
developed. Finally, we proposed a model of scientific inquiry process consisting of research motives, scientific inquiry skills,
and results of inquiry.

This paper examines student attitudes towards affirmative action over 4 years of college. Asian American and Latino/a students
were more likely than White students to disagree strongly or somewhat with abolishing affirmative action after 4 years of
college. A student’s attitude towards the policy as a first-year student, peer group influence, and political orientation
were significant predictors of student attitudes of affirmative action during the fourth year of college. The findings suggest
that while college plays some role in shaping affirmative action attitudes, its influence is somewhat limited in comparison

This study examines the factors that influence people's adoption and use of a digital library system and tests the applicability of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in the context of developing countries. Using data from a survey of 16 institutions in Africa, Asia, and Central/Latin America (N = 1082), a path analysis revealed that perceived ease of use of the library system had a significant impact on perceived usefulness, which ultimately led to behavioral intention to use. In addition, the study examined the similarities and differences in the significant predictors of the digital library acceptance across countries and continents. Further, the current study suggests that external variables that affect perceived ease of use and usefulness need to be considered as important factors in the process of designing, implementing, and operating digital library systems. Such consideration will help decrease the mismatch between system design and local users’ realities, and further facilitate the successful adoption of digital library systems in developing countries. 相似文献

AbstractThis study uses decision tree analysis to determine the most important variables that predict high overall teaching and course scores on a student evaluation of teaching (SET) instrument at a large public research university in the United States. Decision tree analysis is a more robust and intuitive approach for analysing and interpreting SET scores compared to more common parametric statistical approaches. Variables in this analysis included individual items on the SET instrument, self-reported student characteristics, course characteristics and instructor characteristics. The results show that items on the SET instrument that most directly address fundamental issues of teaching and learning, such as helping the student to better understand the course material, are most predictive of high overall teaching and course scores. SET items less directly related to student learning, such as those related to course grading policies, have little importance in predicting high overall teaching and course scores. Variables irrelevant to the construct, such as an instructor’s gender and race/ethnicity, were not predictive of high overall teaching and course scores. These findings provide evidence of criterion and discriminant validity, and show that high SET scores do not reflect student biases against an instructor’s gender or race/ethnicity. 相似文献

Madaris (plural of madrasa) face a multitude of challenges in preparing students for life in rapidly modernising societies and emerging globalised knowledge economies. The complexity of the role and tasks of madaris, which are caught in the interface of modernity and tradition, the challenges they face, and the strategies they develop to address these challenges, suggest the need for a very cautious approach when attaining a clear picture of madrasa education and making conclusive statements about them. The literature has contributed more to confusion than clarity about the number of madaris, their rationale, purpose, pedagogy, curricula, funding, administration, relations with the state, and global violence. This paper presents an account of current debates of madrasa education and reform focusing on madaris within the diverse Sunni schools of thought and denominations located across South Asia and Southeast Asia. Based on an extensive review and analysis of over 90 articles, an overview of madrasa education and an examination of the issues and challenges facing Islamic schools that struggle to uphold tradition, and those that have begun to embrace modernisation and integration in the global process of change is given. The extent that some Islamic education systems are willing to collaborate with non-Muslims and in the process potentially enrich their circle of interest while engaging with the rest of the world in dialogue offers promising glimpses and a sense of hope for religious-based education in Muslim communities in the 21st century. 相似文献

This study examines the impact of the environment on pupils' learning of values. The sample selected for the study was 14 secondary schools, 3 Mission and 11 government schools. In all, 3102 Secondary 1 and 2 pupils were involved in the study. The study adopted an 80% cut-off point as a decision rule for interpreting the data. Among the dimensions considered were teacher helpfulness, affiliation, peer relationship and cooperativeness, class learning environment, values of respect, trust and attitude towards school rules. The study found that sharing and caring, mutual respect between teachers and pupils and courtesy were not strongly represented. It also found a bias towards friendship over obligation to public morality. On the positive side, there was strong achievement orientation and a belief among pupils that teachers were helpful and interested in pupils. 相似文献
