Among 68 students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, academic success was positively correlated with time management skills and freedom from financial stress. As a group, students with higher grade point averages reported fewer coping resources than did academically lower achieving students. Less academically successful students likely spend more time using coping mechanisms and therefore may have less time to study. In this article the authors present a critical assessment of existing characterizations of resiliency and help-seeking behavior in light of their relevance to issues of minority youth socialization and schooling. In this effort, they reconceptualize the notion of resiliency within an analysis that highlights the more contextual aspects of how minority adolescent cope with structural forces that threaten healthy development. They show how key developmental transitions are thwarted by social forces that undermine the development of supportive relationships across multiple institutional sites (e.g., family, neighborhood, school). They also explain how resiliency is associated with egocentric networks that exhibit key structural characteristics. The authors conclude by discussing the implications of a critical network-analytic model of minority socialization in the development of future educational and youth mediations and reforms. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This essay adopts a critical rhetorical perspective attuned to affect to investigate white nationalist rhetoric on Stormfront, a popular white nationalist message board. My analysis illuminates how Stormfront attempts to appeal to mainstream white audiences by resisting normative expectations and affects articulated with white supremacy and (re)constructing white nationalism as a formation of white racial consciousness articulated with communal belonging, common sense, and pride. On Stormfront, affect is mobilized discursively to challenge colorblindness, construct rhetorical distance between white nationalism and white supremacy, and strategically negotiate white (dis)comfort with direct discourse on race to compel affective investments in white nationalism. 相似文献

This article adds to the research on teachers' writing pedagogy. It reviews and challenges the research literature on scaffolding as an instructional practice and presents a more inclusive framework for analysis. As student participation and voice were absent from much of the literature, a participatory scaffolding framework was developed to observe, analyse and interpret how one teacher and her primary school aged students co‐constructed learning to write. The case study revealed that the scaffolding interactions were complex, recursive and responsive to students' learning. The teacher wove multiple layers of scaffolding, encouraging student talk and metacognitive awareness, thus creating a 'magic space’ where minds could meet allowing negotiation and handover. 相似文献
