This paper reports the experiences of 150 children and six primary teachers when active learning pedagogies were introduced into the first year of primary schools. Although active learning increased the amount of talk between children, those from socio‐economically advantaged homes talked more than those from less advantaged homes. Also, individual children experienced very little time engaged in high‐quality talk with the teacher, despite the teachers spending over one‐third of their time responding to children's needs and interests. Contextual differences, such as the different staffing ratios in schools and pre‐schools, may affect how well the benefits of active learning transfer from pre‐school contexts into primary schools. Policy‐makers and teachers should pay particular attention to the implications of this for the education of children from economically less advantaged home backgrounds. 相似文献

Prevalence of child sexual abuse reported by a cross-sectional sample of New Zealand women 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
OBJECTIVE: The objective is to describe the prevalence of child sexual abuse (CSA) among women in New Zealand, document ethnic specific rates, and outline the frequency of abuse experienced and the most commonly identified perpetrators. Associations between CSA and later adverse consequences were also explored. METHODS: Retrospective report from a random sample of 2,855 women aged 18-64 years old in two regions in New Zealand. Face-to-face interviews with one randomly selected woman from each household were conducted. RESULTS: The overall prevalence rates for CSA were 23.5% for women from the urban region and 28.2% from the rural region. In both urban and rural regions, Māori women more frequently reported experiences of CSA than women from European and other ethnic groups (urban: 30.5% vs. 17.0% and rural: 35.1% vs. 20.7%). The median age of onset of the abuse was 9 years, and the median estimated age of the abuser was 30 years. Half of those who experienced CSA reported that it occurred once or twice, 27% "a few times," and 23% "multiple times." Sole perpetrators were involved in 83% of cases. The majority of cases were perpetrated by a family member, most frequently male. Compared with non-victims, victims of CSA were twice as likely to experience later intimate partner violence and violence by others. CONCLUSIONS: This study reports on a large, population-based sample in an ethnically diverse population in New Zealand, providing the first ethnic-specific rates of CSA available. The purpose of this study was to examine sibling communication satisfaction, with a specific focus on interpersonal solidarity, individualized trust, and self‐disclosure. Respondents (N = 360) were asked to report on a relationship with either an older sister, younger sister, older brother, or younger brother. Results indicate that interpersonal solidarity is the largest predictor of sibling communication satisfaction, followed by individualized trust, and self‐disclosure. 相似文献

This article chronicles the rapid expansion since 1990 of research within archival science and characterizes contemporary
archival research culture. It examines the role and state of key factors that have led to the development of the existing
research infrastructure, such as growth in doctoral education, forums for presenting and publishing research, the numbers
and size of graduate archival education programs, availability of diverse funding for research, transdisciplinary and international
research collaborations, and application of innovative research methods and tools appropriate for investigating increasingly
complex and wide-ranging research questions. An Appendix articulates and names archival research methods, including those
derived and adapted from other disciplines, with a view to adding to the “literary warrant” for archival research methods,
promoting the rigorous application of research design and methods, and providing sources for the teaching of research methods
for professional and research careers. The article concludes with recommendations about how to sustain and extend the emerging

This pilot study set out to ascertain whether the level of dependence on resource material is related to teaching experience,
existing understanding in mechanics, and perceived self confidence in science and technology. Details of teaching experience
and qualifications were obtained from 11 experienced teachers and 10 initial teacher trainees, and understanding of mechanics
was assessed by a written test. Each teacher worked through one commercially produced inservice pack about levers, pulleys
or gears, and then prepared a 30 minute session for 4 ten year old children. Videos of the sessions were analysed with respect
to the extent to which the pack was the sole focus; the amount of integration with other teaching aids and approaches; and
the extent individual children's needs were satisfied. Although science qualifications influenced teacher confidence, they
were not accurate predictors of relevant knowledge and teaching competence. As the majority of teachers followed pack instructions
closely, the children's needs were not always well matched.

This article introduces emergent memory, a conceptual extension to rhetorics of public memory, to describe memory’s genesis in sites built without commemorative commitments. Examining Detroit’s “8 Mile Wall,” a site built to reinforce segregated housing, this project argues the rhetorical tenets of emergent memory present in this space. As a relic of segregated history, the wall symbolically recalls the city’s controversial past, but has recently been the subject of a local mural project to redefine the wall’s purpose. Some consider this a step toward reclamation, as it visually repositions the disturbing remnant. For others, the murals simply cannot overwrite troubling memories of the city’s discriminatory history. This essay uses emergent memory to describe how the wall’s complicated mnemonic legacy simultaneously harkens to a difficult history and how the mural additions use that same legacy to convey an optimistic future for Detroit and those marked by this urban space. 相似文献
