Does mobility have to mean being hard to reach? Mobile pastoralists and education’s ‘terms of inclusion’

Nomadic groups are highly discriminated against in access to education services, and the 2010 Education For All Global Monitoring Report demanded urgent action to address their education deprivation. Mobile pastoralists, particularly, appear to be falling beyond the remit of migration studies in education, although they are among the most mobile people in the world. Pastoralists’ education inclusion has been promoted by models of provision across the ‘mainstream’, ‘alternative’ and Open Learning traditions, but examples from around the world show that each broad approach comes with identifiable ‘terms of inclusion’ that, in different ways, reproduce and/or challenge pastoralists’ marginalisation. Achieving political commitment to addressing the scale and extent of pastoralists’ education deprivation is not unimaginable, but contingent on significant reappraisal of mobility as a livelihood strategy and of the legitimacy of pastoralism as a sustainable contemporary livelihood.     

Factors Influencing the Ally Development of College Students

Allies represent a crucial faction in the work for social justice; as members of the dominant population who advocate for the oppressed, they are important collaborators in this struggle. This qualitative inquiry investigated the ally development of 13 college students at a religiously affiliated institution in a Midwestern urban area. The interviews yielded several common factors, including personality qualities, family influence, faith, and realizations of Otherness. Implications for fostering the development of allies are discussed along with suggestions for future research.

In Part I properties of the scale coördinate, of the form: B(n + θ) are discussed. n is shown to be associated with the operation of counting scale marks, θ with the operation of estimating between them, and B, with the operational and configurational aspects of that part of apparatus which lies adjunct to the scale system.In Part II three types of measurement codification are discussed: (a) the differential interval; (b) the finite amorphous interval; (c) the scale interval; a relationship among them is postulated.In Part III the finite differences in scale coördinates are defined and simple theorems are used to illustrate these definitions. Simple difference equations in scale coördinates are solved to illustrate macroscopic “selection principles” arising partly out of the methodology of codifying a coincidence in scale coördinates.In Part IV an example of causally related dimensional systems is described by use of the scale coördinate. This example is taken from the perfect gas law and Van der Waals' gas law.     

A short account of the theory of lubrication. IV. Temperature rise and temperature distribution in bearings

The modern understanding of lubrication is based on the equations of the hydrodynamic theory. These equations, as has been seen, describe the performance of a bearing in terms of the actual film viscosity but, of course, this depends on the temperature of the film, which in general is unknown. We have next to consider whether there is any way of calculating or predicting the steady running temperature of a bearing.It is not commonly realized that there is a rational solution for this problem.The solution depends both on the rate of generating heat by friction, and on the rate of heat transfer from the bearing to its surroundings.
