Recurring phases of engaging life pursuits: Functionality,intuitive excellence,conceptual understanding,and self‐transcendence as they relate to teacher education

Abstract

Acquiring teaching competence in teacher preparation programs involves the phases of functionality (the technology of teaching), intuitive excellence (the art of teaching), conceptual understanding (the science of teaching), and self‐transcendence (the spiritual aspect of teaching). These phases are recurring as each task involved in the teaching act is undertaken during the life pursuit of teaching competence.     

TEACHING THE ETHNOGRAPHY OF AGING

This paper discusses the opportunities for student directed research within a service-learning framework. Using a community development framework, students at the high school, college, and graduate levels gained a deeper understanding of the daily experiences of older persons in the community. These projects were embedded in a multi-year community development process fostered by the Evergreen Institute on Elder Environments, in Bloomington, Indiana. Through the collaborations of the Institute, the learning outcomes for students have contributed to the broader community effort to make Bloomington a good place to grow old.     

A perpetual motion machine: The preserved digital scholarly record

• Digital preservation will never be a solved problem: it needs constant reinvention, and is going to become harder over time.
• Scholarship is changing and this is affecting what needs to be preserved and what preservation means to the future of knowledge discovery.
• The diversification of outputs means that knowledge exists in a network of contextual metadata, data, software, standards and publications—requiring multilateral management of this complex knowledge graph.
• Preservation demands new skills, technologies and resources from librarians, publishers, funders and institutions—and more joined-up thinking about archiving.
