Zusammenfassung.   Im Bereich Planungstechnik und Deklarative Programmierung des GMD-Instituts für Rechnerarchitektur und Softwaretechnik (FIRST) werden Forschungen zur Weiterentwicklung von Methoden der Constraint-Logischen Programmierung und von Verfahren der Künstlichen Intelligenz durchgeführt sowie Anwendungen der entwickelten Methodiken für die Planung, Konfiguration und Simulation von Problemen in der Produktion und Logistik untersucht.     

Physical attractiveness and monetary success in German Bundesliga

That attractive people are more successful has been proved for many areas of life in the past. However, the effects of the attractiveness of professional athletes have not been examined yet. This is surprising as it is comparatively simple to measure the actual performance of this group of people and to control their performance in statistical models. In the study, 438 professional football players were examined who played in the 18 teams of the German Bundesliga in 2007 and 2008. It was analyzed how their facial and bodily attractiveness influence their market value. Bodily attractiveness was operationalized using the Body Mass Index, facial attractiveness was measured using the Truth of Consensus Method. Statistical analysis shows that both facial and bodily attractiveness have considerable effects on a player’s market value even if his actual performance is controlled.

EQUIVALENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION ‐‐ A VIEW FROM THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

The authors of this article make a plea for the rationalization and the streamlining of the procedures for granting recognition of foreign diplomas and studies and for obtaining rulings as to their equivalence. The removal of the remaining economic barriers among the countries of the European Community at the end of 1992 is bound to stimulate the mobility of students, graduates, and job seekers, many of whom already, on an individual basis, think of themselves as members of an international community. What is needed, in addition to a strong commitment to the very ideas of mobility, equivalence, and recognition of diplomas as well as efficient means for making decisions on these questions, is goodwill, increased flexibility, and easy access to accurate and up‐to‐date information for both seekers and granters. Also, professional licensing procedures for foreign workers will need to be liberalized.     

Schulformen als differenzielle Lernmilieus Institutionelle und kompositionelle Effekte auf die Leistungsentwicklung im Fach Franz?sisch

Auf der Basis von zwei repr?sentativen Schülerstichproben der Schweizer Kantone Wallis (N = 926) und Fribourg (N = 778), die w?hrend der 8. Jahrgangsstufe im Fach Franz?sisch als Fremdsprache unterrichtet wurden, geht der vorliegende Beitrag der Frage nach, ob Schülerinnen und Schüler je nach besuchtem Bildungsgang unterschiedliche Fortschritte in der Entwicklung ihrer Fachleistungen machen. Von besonderem Interesse ist dabei, ob und in welchem Ausma? die Zusammensetzung der Schülerschaft (Kompositions-effekte) und m?glicherweise auch institutionell differierende didaktische und curriculare Angebote zwischen den Bildungsg?ngen (Institutionseffekte) als lernmilieupr?gende Faktoren von Bedeutung für die Entwicklung der Fachleistungen sind. In Mehrebenenanalysen zeigten sich auch nach Kontrolle der individuellen Eingangsvoraussetzungen (einschlie?lich des Vorwissens) bedeutsame Unterschiede in den Lernzuw?chsen an den verschiedenen Bildungsg?ngen. Die weiteren Analysen lassen darauf schlie?en, dass sowohl von kompositionellen als auch institutionellen Effekten auf die Leistungsentwicklung auszugehen ist.     

The Changing Debate on Internationalisation of Higher Education

Internationalisation, the growing border-crossing activities between national systems of higher education is losing ground to globalisation, increasing border-crossing activities of blurred national systems which is often employed to depict world-wide trends and growing global competition. This article addresses recent issues of knowledge transfer. It points out tensions between increasing diversity in higher education and efforts to facilitate recognition of prior studies on student mobility. It shows the diversity of steering and management policies with respect to internationalisation and globalisation. Finally, it asks whether globalisation of higher education has to be viewed as a manifestation of turbo-capitalism or could be viewed instead as a move towards global understanding.
