This study compared staff and elderly knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to sexual expression by elderly persons in a long‐term care setting. Volunteers (N = 194) responded agree or disagree to 159 items. Significant differences were observed between the staff and elderly responses on 36 items. Areas of greatest differences involved knowledge and attitudes about consensual sex and sexual abuse, issues related to family attitudes toward remarriage and sexual expression, and age‐related changes and health problems related to sexuality. Items related to masturbation received the greatest percentage of no response. The staff had significantly higher total scores as compared to the elderly reflecting more knowledge, positive attitudes, and support for more proactive responses toward elderly sexuality. Medical care in nursing homes is not provided by board-licensed geriatricians; it mainly comes from physicians in need of educational programs in the field of geriatrics. Such programs, based on curriculum guidelines, should be developed. The purpose of this study was to seek input from nursing home physicians on their perceived needs for training in geriatrics. A mail questionnaire survey was sent to nursing home physicians regarding their opinion on the most needed subjects and preferred training methods. Of the 210 surveys mailed, 132 (63%) were returned. More than a quarter of the respondents had not had any kind of geriatric medical education. A desire for geriatric training was evident, preferably in the form of courses and periodic seminars. Use of medications, infectious diseases, depression, dementia and cardiac disorders were the most important topics indicated by the respondents. These data can be of help in preparing the curriculum for a continuous medical education program in geriatrics, preferably in the form of courses and periodic seminars. 相似文献

Students’ writing problems are a global educational concern and is in need of particular attention. This study aims to examine the impact of providing extra writing opportunities (i.e., writing journals) on the quality of writing compositions. A longitudinal cluster-randomized controlled design using a multilevel modeling analysis with 182 fourth grade students was conducted. We examined whether students’ writing quality differed when writing journals on a weekly basis for 12 weeks, compared with a control group. Three covariates were analyzed, namely: (i) the students’ attitudes towards writing; (ii) their self-efficacy in writing; (iii) and their use of self-regulation (SRL) strategies while writing. Findings have shown that students who wrote week-journals significantly improved the writing quality of their compositions and reported a higher use of SRL strategies in writing. Nevertheless, self-efficacy and attitude towards writing were found to not be related to the quality of the compositions. Moreover, data indicated that the writing quality of compositions improved along with the writing quality of the week-journals. At-risk families’ control style (autonomy support and coercive control) was examined in relation to children's school readiness; children's social skills and mastery motivation were hypothesized mediating variables. In two different, low-income samples from diverse ethnic backgrounds, one preschool sample recruited from Head Start (N = 199) and a school transition sample composed of children entering elementary school (N = 344), parental control styles were related to children's academic readiness modestly but significantly in the preschool sample and weakly in the school transition sample. Children's social skills and mastery motivation skills (persistence and goal orientation) were significantly related to the academic measures of school readiness, and fully mediated the association between parents’ use of coercive behavioral control and academic readiness. Such mediation could not be tested for parental support of children's autonomy. The results indicate that a developmental cascade exists between parental control strategies and academic indices of school readiness, emphasizing the importance of family context models of school readiness. Furthermore, strong correlations between the domains of school readiness were found in both samples, reinforcing calls for a multidimensional approach to supporting school readiness in early childhood education programs. 相似文献

This qualitative study examines the interplay between academic staff and international students with regard to developing
academic literacies at university. Higher education has traditionally responded to increasing student diversity with the expectation
that students will conform to institutional norms or habitus. In this context international students arrive with cultural
capital which may not fit such norms, and would benefit from developing their academic literacy, as indeed would home students
given an increasingly diverse student body in Irish higher education. Findings reveal a gap between academics expectations
and international students’ capabilities. Academic staff remained within the remit of the research in contrast to the 22 international
students who were interviewed. They did not separate the totality of their campus experience from academic literacy practices.
These ranged from uncertainty around writing in another language to a mismatch between diversity management in class and students’
own expectations. International students found difficulty to making friends on campus which could benefit their integration
into the academic literacy practices of their respective disciplines. Findings point towards a whole institution response

An hybrid uninterrupted multi-speed transmission (HUMST), based on the integration of a planetary gear set and a 3-speed automatic manual transmission (3-AMT), is developed to satisfy the specific performance indexes of mining trucks. The power-split device can alleviate and eliminate the inherent torque interruption of the 3-AMT during gear shift by implementing the designed cooperative shift control strategy which is optimized by quadratic performance index. In order to achieve fast torque coordination while guaranteeing the driving comfort performance, the torque profiles of the power split device and the traction motor are optimized by Linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) algorithm. Dynamic programming (DP) is implemented as a benchmark to demonstrate the maximum fuel efficiency of the proposed HUMST. Because of the high computational cost of optimal control strategies such as DP, an improved real-time control strategy (IRTCS) using modified Gaussian distribution function is proposed to significantly reduce the computing load. As efficiency-oriented energy control strategy would result in frequent gear shifts, to achieve a desirable tradeoff between the overall efficiency and the shift stability, multi-objective genetic algorithm (MGA) is integrated to optimize the overall performance. The detail mathematical and dynamic model shows that the proposed shifting strategy with LQR can effectively suppress shift jerk, and the proposed IRTCS with MGA can reduce shift frequency by 70.78% to improve the drivability, only sacrificing 4.86% of overall efficiency compared to that of DP. 相似文献

This phenomenological study, based on ecological systems theory, examined the college student bereavement experience in a Christian university. Undergraduate students (N = 127) from a small Christian university provided answers to open‐ended questions about their experiences regarding college following a death loss. Results indicate that students are generally successful in adapting to bereavement and prefer an environment open to discussing death and asking difficult religious questions.
