Dial the Difference—How and Why BBC Local Radio and Independent Local Radio Developed Different News Services

This article is principally concerned with how and why these 2 types of radio news developed. It discusses the culture, ethos and practices of the 2 services and, in particular, if and how each was influenced by the other. Much of the article is concerned about how the new commercial stations developed practices and styles that were consciously different from, and in some cases in direct opposition to, those at the BBC, both nationally and locally. The article argues that it was the BBC which adopted and integrated commercial radio’s style and practices, rather than, as is often supposed, the other way around.     

On the Boundaries of Framing Terrorism: Guilt,Victimization, and the 2016 Orlando Shooting

The 2016 Orlando shooting offers an intriguing lens through which to evaluate the boundaries of media frames in the interpretation of terrorism. Using an experimental design (N = 243), the current study investigated the effects of two dominant frames—the homophobic hate crime and the Islamic terrorist frame—on collective guilt, collective victimization, and pro–lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) political action. In addition, political partisanship and social network diversity were evaluated as potential moderators. Compared to the Islamic terrorist frame, exposure to the homophobic hate crime frame increased collective guilt and decreased collective victimization, subsequently enhancing support for the LGBTQ community. Moreover, social network diversity was shown to override the framing effect, as individuals who reported high diversity were more likely to sign a petition in solidarity with the LGBTQ community, irrespective of frame condition.     

History of the preanalytical phase: a personal view

In the 70ies of the last century, ther term “preanalytical phase” was introduced in the literature. This term describes all actions and aspects of the “brain to brain circle” of the medical laboratory diagnostic procedure happening before the analytical phase. The author describes his personal experiences in the early seventies and the following history of increasing awareness of this phase as the main cause of “laboratory errors”. This includes the definitions of influence and interference factors as well as the first publications in book, internet, CD-Rom and recent App form over the past 40 years. In addition, a short summary of previous developments as prerequesits of laboratory diagnostic actions is described from the middle age matula for urine collection to the blood collection tubes, anticoagulants and centrifuges. The short review gives a personal view on the possible causes of missing awareness of preanalytical causes of error and future aspects of new techniques in regulation of requests to introduction of quality assurance programs for preanalytical factors.     

The detonation wave from solid explosives

It has been shown that the detonation wave from a solid explosive changes in velocity after leaving the explosive. In the case of some low-velocity explosives, e.g., about 2400 metres per second, the velocity of the detonation wave increases by approximately 100–200 metres per second. With other high-velocity explosives, 5000–6000 m./sec., the velocity may decrease to around 4400 metres in some cases.Careful measurements have shown that a zone of uniform velocity exists beyond the surface of the explosive, the dimensions of the zone depending on the diameter of the sphere of the explosive or the diameter of the cartridge detonated. In the case of a $\text{1}\text{1}\text{4}$-inch dynamite cartridge, the zone of uniform velocity extended for about ten inches, while, with a sphere of explosive four inches in diameter, the zone extended for about 25 inches.An explanation of the reason for the high velocity of the detonation wave in the gaseous medium is suggested, linking it up with either the velocity of sound at the temperatures prevailing or the kinetic velocity of the gaseous particles themselves, the latter explanation appearing to be more in accordance with the determined facts. Such an explanation implies the assumption of extremely high momentary temperatures at the wave front, in some cases of over 40,000° C. These extremely high temperatures are due partly to the heat of combustion of the explosive ingredients but more to the heating effect resulting from the enormous pressures developed at the moment of explosion, as previously applied by Berthelot and Dixon in the study of gaseous explosions. Adiabatic conditions are assumed in such calculations. With such an explanation, reasonable agreement between theory and fact is obtained for a number of explosives, and the discrepancies that exist are in cases where discrepancies might be expected.     

Native american related materials in elementary science instruction

The low achievement of Native American students, as measured by standardized tests, results from a number of factors, including the lack of cultural relevance of curriculum materials used in their instruction. Using a pretest–posttest control group design, Native American students in Bureau of Indian Affairs schools in Grades 4–8 who were taught science using culturally relevant materials achieved significantly higher and displayed a significantly more positive attitude toward Native Americans and science than comparable students who were taught science without the culturally relevant materials. It is suggested that when educators of Native Americans teach science, they should use materials that incorporate frequent reference to Native Americans and science.
