Dynamics of Engineering Education ?Uniformity or Quality

A number of internal and external pressures bear down on engineering colleges today. These include the shortage of experienced manpower, the rapid rate of scientific discoveries requiring absorption in curricula, the increasing college population, competition by industry for faculty members, and the need for additional income for plant expansion and faculty salaries. Within the body of engineering schools, one faction presses for the scientific reorientation of curricula while another holds to the professional art of design as the principle requirement in engineering colleges. Despite the traditional assumption that education is distinguished by large moments of inertia and that the time scale is measured in terms of generations, we lack sufficient time in a world of latent chaos. Positive and exciting internal forces must be injected into our dynamic system.

Portable classroom leads to partnership

Library faculty participation on the School of Medicine Curriculum Steering Committee led to a unique opportunity to partner technology and teaching utilizing the library's portable wireless classroom. The pathology lab course master expressed a desire to revise the curriculum using patient cases and direct access to the Web and library resources. Since the pathology lab lacked computers, the library's portable wireless classroom provided a solution. Originally developed to provide maximum portability and flexibility, the wireless classroom consists of ten laptop computers configured with wireless cards and an access point. While the portable wireless classroom led to a partnership with the School of Medicine, there were additional benefits and positive consequences for the library.     

Graphite into diamonds: Using teams to strengthen intracollegial interaction

In an information-processing organization, it is essential that lines of communications stay open and fluid, and that can best be accomplished through cooperative teamwork. In science, when graphite is subjected to extreme heat and pressure, it is converted into a diamond. When pressure is applied to a collegiate bureaucracy through retraining key personnel, it can be transformed into a team promoting unity and interaction. Strategies for developing teams are discussed.Mark D. After a career in which he provided orthopedic services to physicians and medical facilities, he taught in private schools and Tulsa Junior College before joining Oral Roberts University where he is Assistant Professor of Anatomy in the School of Medicine.Thomas A. Karman earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, with majors in History and Political Science, from Albion College, his Master of Arts, with a major in East Asia Regional Studies, from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Toledo. After serving The Defiance College as a faculty member and administrator, he joined Oklahoma State University, where he is Professor and Head of the department of Educational Administration and Higher Education.
