An intelligent spelling error corrector

This paper describes an intelligent spelling error correction system for use in a word processing environment. The system employs a dictionary of 93,769 words and provided the intended word is in the dictionary it identifies 80 to 90% of spelling and typing errors.     

Bibliographic control of medical illustrations--a case study in the development of a library subsystem: II. Project implementation

This second part of a two-part paper describes how the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Library implemented a bibliographic control system for a medical illustrations collection. Discussed are the staffing of the project, the design of formats and computer programs, further design changes, the input process, quality evaluation of the illustrations, and production and distribution of the control products (printed indexes and microfiche replicas). The report ends with a note on the applicability of the UCSF system to other libraries, and some benefits of the project.     

Laboratory to Classroom: The Practical Application of IPR in a Master's Level Prepracticum Counselor Education Program

This controlled study analyzed the comparative effectiveness of two prepracticum methods on the subsequent interviewing skills of candidates for a master's degree in counseling. One method was based on a theory of counselor developmental tasks and was implemented by a specific use of the Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) technique. The other, a more traditional prepracticum, consisted of an overview of counseling theories and practices and made extensive use of group discussion presentation and critiques of prerecorded audio- and videotapes. The results of the study indicate that it is possible to incorporate media techniques into a training model within the financial and time limitations of an ongoing master's level program. The IPR training procedures studied were run entirely by advanced graduate students, using one video-recording facility and no faculty time. The statistically significant results of the present study are especially meaningful because they replicate the positive findings of previous studies, and also because the results were obtained in an ongoing course offered by the university and not in a laboratory or special training setting.     

Assessment of Experiential Learning in business administration

A study at Syracuse University funded by the Cooperative Assessment of Experiential Learning resulted in the development of a model for the assessment of experiential learning and the awarding of appropriate academic credit in a given educational environment. Academic courses were restructured to incorporate clearly stated performance (outcome) objectives grouped in logical modules. Self-assessment instruments, based on these objectives, were developed to provide the basis for establishing the criteria for awarding academic credit based upon the results of the self-assessment. Students possessing measurable knowledge at a level above the predetermined criteria may be awarded partial or full credit for the courses completed. Faculty were utilized to validate the self-assessment of students and specify the credit to be recorded.
