在英语中,定语从句是最容易生成语篇的一种常用的关系.定语从句被放置名词后面,作后置修饰语,翻译此类句子时,通常按汉语的"……的"前置结构翻译,而很少从关系的角度考虑所表达两个或两个以上的事物或事件之间的关系.有些定语从句起到了状语从句的功能,说明原因、结果、条件、让步、转折、目的、时空等关系.文章主要从定语从句所包含的关系来探讨定语从句的翻译.     

Outlook in life of older adults and their health and community condition

ABSTRACT

Positive outlook in life is believed to help safeguard aging people against the negative experiences and considered to reduce the risk of health diseases. We analyzed the health condition, cognition, mobility, and community condition of 4,692 older adults from the National Health and Aging Trends Study based on their outlook in life: positive, negative, and neutral group. The presence of heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, and lung disease contributes to older adults’ negative outlook in life. Most older adults who belong to the positive outlook group rated their memory as very good. In contrast, most older adults in a negative outlook group perceived their memory as fair and poor, and mostly need the help of others to leave the house and have trust issues. The findings may provide new opportunities by intervening with policies and practices that generally may intensify a positive outlook in life.

Modeling and validation of autoinducer-mediated bacterial gene expression in microfluidic environments

Biosensors exploiting communication within genetically engineered bacteria are becoming increasingly important for monitoring environmental changes. Currently, there are a variety of mathematical models for understanding and predicting how genetically engineered bacteria respond to molecular stimuli in these environments, but as sensors have miniaturized towards microfluidics and are subjected to complex time-varying inputs, the shortcomings of these models have become apparent. The effects of microfluidic environments such as low oxygen concentration, increased biofilm encapsulation, diffusion limited molecular distribution, and higher population densities strongly affect rate constants for gene expression not accounted for in previous models. We report a mathematical model that accurately predicts the biological response of the autoinducer N-acyl homoserine lactone-mediated green fluorescent protein expression in reporter bacteria in microfluidic environments by accommodating these rate constants. This generalized mass action model considers a chain of biomolecular events from input autoinducer chemical to fluorescent protein expression through a series of six chemical species. We have validated this model against experimental data from our own apparatus as well as prior published experimental results. Results indicate accurate prediction of dynamics (e.g., 14% peak time error from a pulse input) and with reduced mean-squared error with pulse or step inputs for a range of concentrations (10 μM–30 μM). This model can help advance the design of genetically engineered bacteria sensors and molecular communication devices.     

Rethinking Policy Diffusion: The Interstate Spread of “Finance Innovations”

Recently a number of studies have focused on states' adoptions of postsecondary-specific policies. Cutting across much of this research is the presence and influence of interstate diffusion of policy adoptions, a phenomenon for which support is scant. This paper seeks to address this through broadening the categorization of policies beyond the discrete form traditionally used to one that encompasses a larger conception of "finance policy." Our sample uses 131 finance innovations for 47 states over a 29 year period, finding that upon broadening our definition, we can detect the process of diffusion. However, the findings are striking, showing that while states do learn from one another, the process is dynamic and shifts across time.     

A Consumer‐Driven Approach to Increase Suggestive Selling

Several research articles have been published demonstrating the effectiveness of behavioral interventions in improving suggestive selling behavior of sales staff (e.g., Johnson & Masotti, 1990; Martinko, White, & Hassell, 1989; Mirman, 1982; Ralis & O'Brien, 1986). Procedures employed in these studies made use of two classes of personnel to implement the intervention: (1) personnel internal to the organization or (2) external consultants. The current study examined the efficacy of a consumer‐driven approach to improve suggestive selling behavior of three employees of a fast food franchise. Customers delivered either a verbal prompt or praise to an employee after they had placed their order. Delivery of a prompt or praise depended on whether or not the employee made a suggestion for an additional food purchase. This consumer‐driven intervention increased suggestive selling behaviors of all three employees, and was associated with higher suggestive sales in each case.
