Sex education is a contentious issue. Recently debates in the UK have tended to concentrate on the need to reduce teenage pregnancy rates and on the 'promotion of homosexuality'. This article examines the issues that need to be addressed if boys are to receive the sex education they require. These issues include the characteristics and gender of the teacher needed; methodologies to which boys will respond; the perception of boys as problems in school; the content of sex education programmes, the need for separate classes and the ongoing concern of boys' literacy standards. Added to these are issues such as homosexuality and pornography, areas which are avoided in many schools. The culture related to boys' attitudes to education in general and sex education in particular are examined. The author calls for a change in approach and attitude by government in order to achieve the desired lowering of teenage pregnancy rates and for the adoption of a more positive attitude to sex education by government, parents and teachers. 相似文献

This article describes the preferences expressed by 16‐year‐old and 17‐year‐old boys when they were asked what they want to learn from sex and relationship education classes and how they want to be taught. Research was carried out in eight secondary schools with boys in year 12. Qualitative responses from questionnaires issued to 307 boys were analysed together with the results from three focus groups carried out in three of the schools. The research found that in most areas boys are not being taught what they want to know. The areas of feelings and emotions, sexuality, sexual techniques, sexually transmitted infections, pornography and the effects of the ‘boy culture’ are not being addressed sufficiently, or in some cases at all. Boys also called for smaller class groups, and for more active methods of teaching and some of them asked for time away from girls to express themselves without censure. This article discusses the attitudes of people concerned with the under fives, to the subject of gender and play experiences. Playgroup workers, parents and social work staff were questioned on their beliefs about children's choices in play. Amongst the playgroup workers and social work staff there appeared to be a belief that children should be free to choose their play activities and that these choices were often influenced by gender, as biological factors make boys and girls want to play in different ways. Parents, they believed, would object to any coercion or positive discrimination in favour of girls to allow them equal access to play material. Parents, on the other hand, were anxious for playgroups to remove gender stereotyping and assumed that positive action was being taken. The purpose of this study was to explore the profiles of classroom behaviour relating to attention and executive functions in children with very poor working memory, and to test the hypothesis that inattentive behaviour and working memory problems co-occur. Teachers rated problem behaviours of 52 children with low working memory scores aged 5/6 and 9/10 years on teacher rating measures of attention and executive function behaviours. The majority of children with low working memory scores obtained atypically high ratings of cognitive problems/ inattentive symptoms, and were judged to have short attention spans, high levels of distractibility, problems in monitoring the quality of their work, and difficulties in generating new solutions to problems. These results extend previous findings that working memory problems and inattentive behaviour co-occur to a non-clinical sample. It is suggested that reduced working memory capacity may play a causal role in the problem behaviours of these children. 相似文献

The authors collected narrative data from 11 African American female college students at a predominantly White institution using the Career Construction Interview (Savickas & Hartung, 2012 ), the Future Career Autobiography (Rehfuss, 2009 ), and a qualitative career experiences questionnaire. Using the constant comparison method (Strauss & Corbin, 1990 ), the authors uncovered 4 overarching themes based on the unique experiences of participants. Globally, science curricula have been described as outdated, and students perceive school science as lacking in relevance.
Declines in senior secondary and tertiary student participation in science indicate an urgent need for change if we are to
sustain future scientific research and development, and perhaps more importantly, to equip students with the knowledge and
skills to make informed decisions related to scientific research. This paper argues that a good starting point would be the
inclusion of more contemporary areas of science in middle school curricula. One such area with continually emerging developments
is biotechnology. This paper further argues the need for research into the impact of biotechnology education that would allow
students to go beyond learning about biotechnological processes and products to explore their benefits and risks through an
integrated approach, where biotechnology education were extended to include subject areas beyond science, such as social sciences,
health education, and English. Such an approach is important, in light of research that suggests that the general public has
a limited understanding of biotechnology and that public dissemination of information is insufficient to allow individuals
to make informed decisions about or to develop attitudes towards, the varied applications of biotechnology. If we are to educate
students to be tomorrow’s informed decision-makers, we must start by addressing their understanding of and attitudes towards
emerging sciences. Further research is needed to broaden our understanding of how to achieve these goals. 相似文献
