Educational Risk and Resilience in African-American Youth: Context, Self, Action, and Outcomes in School 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
This study examined the empirical validity of a model of human motivation as it applies to school success and failure in 3 independent samples of 10-to 16-year-old African-American youth. Specifically, we assessed how indicators of context, self , and action relate to measures of risk and resilient outcomes in school in 3 different samples, using 3 different measurement strategies. Correlational and path analyses on the 3 data sets supported the empirical validity of the model. African-American youth's experience of their parents' school involvement predicted a composite of self-system processes, which in turn predicted the subjects' reports of their engagement in school. Engagement then predicted school performance and adjustment. The data supported a reciprocal path from action to context, suggesting that youth who show more disaffected patterns of behavior and emotion in school experience less support from their families than those reporting more engaged patterns of action. Implications for program and policy decisions are discussed. 相似文献

On the partition of Ireland in 1921, the Northern Ireland Ministry of Education assumed control of the educational services which had been previously administered by four independent bodies in Dublin. The Education Act (Northern Ireland) 1923 created the county councils and county borough councils of the new devolved state the local education authorities in their areas and imposed on them certain duties for the establishment of machinery for the local administration of education. This paper considers the role of a newly‐formed single county authority in the implementation of technical education in its area. The historical background and the effects of legislation are discussed and the authority’s work relating to the transfer of schools and development and progress of this branch of education are assessed during the early years of the new administration. 相似文献

A well-conceived field trip to a hospital serves several important purposes for elementary school students: (1) it acquaints students with local places of employment while demonstrating the essentiality of work and the need for employees to work together to provide valuable community services, and (2) it helps to reduce the level of anxiety children generally associate with their own hospitalization. In order for a field trip to be something more than a relatively meaningless out-of-school frill, it needs to be carefully planned and carried out. This article offers numerous practical suggestions for getting ready for the hospital visit, the tour itself, and ways to follow-up on the visit, thereby maximizing the educational value of the field trip for elementary age students. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis paper explores how people aged 50 and over, who were returning to cycling as part of an 8-week health and well-being trial, created their own cycling microadventures. Applying a stage model of the process of adventure to qualitative data generated from personal diaries and focus groups, we examine how older people anticipated and prepared for their microadventures, the challenges and discoveries they experienced, the benefits they gained and how electrically assisted ‘e-bikes’ can provide further opportunities for adventure. We conclude that cycles are a mode uniquely placed to facilitate microadventures and that e-bikes, in particular, offer further potential to enable older people to (re-)connect with place and other people. But while this type of activity can provide benefits in terms of health and well-being, we argue that more supportive physical and social infrastructure is required to provide opportunities for more people to undertake microadventures close to their homes. 相似文献
