To test the inversion of intensity interpretation based on negative relations between newborn and preschool intensity behaviors (Bell, Weller, & Waldrop 1971), 106 normal children were examined at the neonatal and preschool periods. Data analyses were carried out in 2 parts: Part I was an attempt to reconstruct the same measures of intensity Bell et al. used at both periods, and Part II was a broader factor analytic analysis using all measures conceptually related to intensity in the neonatal and preschool periods. In Part I, several correlations were in the direction consistent with inversion, but only 1 of 20 correlations reached significance. In Part II, several significant correlations between intensity behavior at newborn and preschool periods were obtained, indicating intense newborn behavior to be related to low levels of socially negative behaviors. Interpretations of intensity behaviors at both periods and their longitudinal relations are discussed. 相似文献

This study investigated the effects of the use of scaffolds in written classroom assessments through the voices of both native English speakers and English language learners from two middle schools. Students responded to assessment tasks in writing, by speaking aloud using think aloud protocols, and by reflecting in a post-assessment interview. The classroom assessment tasks were designed to engage students in scientific sense making and multifaceted language use, as recommended by the Next Generation Science Standards. Data analyses showed that both groups benefitted from the use of scaffolds. The findings revealed specific ways that modifications were supportive in helping students to comprehend, visualize and organize thinking, and elicit responses. This study offers a model for both sensitizing teachers and strengthening their strategies for scaffolding assessments equitably. 相似文献

Abstract This article represents a meta-analysis of three research KEYWORDS projects undertaken recently at the National Foundation for Educational children in Research. The projects were discrete but resultant data showed that they care; had a common focus: ways in which schools do or might accommo-disaffection; date more effectively the needs of a range of pupils who are at risk of inclusion; being denied the opportunity to experience the ‘normality’ of the cur-special riculum offered by schools in England and Wales. The pupils whose educational experiences were studied had special educational needs, and/or were needs ‘disaffected’, and/or were in the public care. While their circumstances were, thus, ostensibly various, analysis showed that they were underpinned by a common set of needs which, unaddressed by the education system, resulted in the exclusion of the pupils. Strategies that effectively nurtured pupils’ inclusion were found to be applicable across the client group. 相似文献

Constructivist views of learning have been applied to science education largely as a response to attempts to understand the
origins of students' misconceptions in science, and therefore the learning process. As part of this effort to understand learning
in science lessons, Appleton (1989) proposed a learning model drawn mainly from Piagetian (1978) ideas and generative learning
theory (Osborne & Wittrock, 1983). This paper explores the development and evolution of the learning model as other constructivist
view were applied, and as the model was tested against students' responses in science lessons. The revised model finally arrived
at is then examined. It was found to be a useful means of describing student's learning processes during a science lesson.

As biotechnology‐related scientific advances, such as stem cell research (SCR), are increasingly permeating the popular media, it has become ever more important to understand students’ ideas about this issue. Very few studies have investigated learners’ ideas about biotechnology. Our study was designed to understand the types of alternative conceptions students hold concerning SCR. The qualitative research design allowed us to examine college students’ understandings about stem cells and SCR. More specifically, we addressed the following questions: How can alternative conceptions about stem cell topics be categorized? What types of alternative conceptions are most common? Participants included 132 students enrolled in a biotechnology course that focused on the scientific background of biotechnology applications relevant to citizens. In this study, we used an inductive approach to develop a taxonomy of alternative ideas about SCR by analyzing student responses to multiple open‐ended data sources. We identified five categories of conceptions: alternative conceptions about what, alternative conceptions about how, alternative conceptions about medical potential, terminology confusion, and political and legal alternative conceptions. In order to improve instruction, it is important to understand students’ ideas when entering the classroom. Our findings highlight a need to teach how science can be applied to societal issues and improve science literacy and citizenship. 相似文献

Data from 561 high-school seniors were analyzed using multiple linear regression to determine the independent contribution of each variable to the criterion of rank in class (R). Significant F ratioswere obtained for SCAT V and Q, teachers’ ratings of Accuracy (ACCU), Effort and Industry (E-I), and Reliability and Responsibility (R-R). R-R and ACCU, but not E-I, were found to be significant preditors of SCAT V and SCAT Q. Females were significantly higher than males on R, ACCU, E-I, and R-R and lower on SCAT Q. The data were interpreted as supporting the effectiveness of teachers’ ratings in predicting academic performance in high school. Females’ superior performance on teacher ratings was interpreted as evidence that females conformed more than males to teachers’ expectations. 相似文献

This study explored the interactions of a highly motivated group of students doing traditional practical work in science.
Interest focussed on the social construction of understanding and how this could be described. Despite considerable collaboration
in constructing an understanding of the task the students rarely focussed on the concepts the practical work was intended
to illustrate. Collaboration was described in terms of social behaviours and discourse moves which supported the use of cognitive
strategies.
