Stroke is the third major cause of death worldwide. Elevated plasma concentration of low density lipoproteins and low plasma concentration of high density lipoprotein concentration are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease but the relation between serum lipids, and cerebrovascular disease is less clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and accuracy of serum lipid profile in assessing the prognosis/neurological worsening in patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular stroke. The subjects in the present study comprised of 101 healthy controls and 150 cerebrovascular stroke patients (including 90 with ischemic stroke and 60 with intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke). In both the groups fasting lipid profile was determined within 72 h of the stroke. A statistically significant association was observed (p < 0.001) between the parameters of lipid profile of cases and healthy controls, and also with the prognosis of the stroke. 相似文献

Vascular thrombotic disorders have emerged as a serious threat to our society. Platelet adhesion to fibrinogen, collagen and other platelet activators exposed over the atherosclerotic plaques can trigger platelet signaling events, activate platelets and lead to thrombotic events. Since anticoagulant and thrombolytic treatment strategies are usually associated with serious bleeding complications, preventing platelets adhesion may help to maintain platelets in an inactive state. In this study we tried to find out the effect of Silver nanoparticles, through their interaction with various platelet surface integrins on platelet adhesion on immobilized fibrinogen. Platelets, isolated from anti-coagulated human whole blood sample from healthy donors, were suspended in physiological buffer and each sample was divided into four tubes. In three of them 0.05, 0.5, and 5 μM concentrations of Silver nanoparticles were added, fourth tube served as control. Platelet adhesion on immobilized fibrinogen matrices and integrin mediated cell signaling events were studied in all the four samples. In the present study we show that nanosilver prevent platelet adhesion without conferring any lytic effect on them and effectively prevents integrin-mediated platelet responses in a concentration-dependent manner. 相似文献

In recent years, increased demand and massive expansion have brought into Indian schools huge numbers of children who might
not have attended in the past. Still, large numbers, and specific groups, of children remain excluded from schooling for various
reasons, jeopardizing equitable access to elementary education. Further accentuating this inequity in provision, the quality
of education remains deeply unsatisfactory, particularly for children from disadvantaged groups. This article explores the
dimensions and issues related to exclusion from education and the policies and actions required to make educational expansion
more equitable, which would contribute to pluralism and harmony and promote greater social cohesion. 相似文献

An imbalance in the systemic redox status leading to oxidative stress has been an important factor in development of senile
cataracts, which is reflected by an increase in serum TBARS and a decrease in plasma SOD activity. Zinc has been an important
cofactor required for structural stability of SOD. In the present study the role of serum zinc level and plasma SOD activity
was analyzed in senile cataract patients showing significant oxidative stress. Serum TBARS, plasma SOD and serum zinc level
was measured in thirty randomly selected senile cataract patients against properly matched controls. Although, the analysis
of means showed a significant increase in serum TBARS and decrease in plasma SOD and serum zinc level in cases, but plasma
SOD was found to be just significantly correlated (p=0.05) with the serum zinc only in the cases. The results of partial correlation
studies and multiple regression analysis, also, showed only a significant correlation and predictable dependence between serum
TBARS and plasma SOD, excluding any role of serum zinc level. The present study concludes that it is chiefly the plasma SOD
activity, but not the serum zinc level, that determines the proneness of the patients for development of senile cataract. 相似文献

Post-treatment of the indomethacin induced ulcerated rats at the optimal dose of 100 mg/kg body-wt. orally for 7 consecutive
days with the lyophilized aqueous extract of the fruits ofPhyllanthus emblica L. syn.Emblica officinalis Gaertn. (Euphorbiaceae) exhibited highly significant (p<0.001) enhancement of secretion of catalase, reduced glutathione
and decrease in malonyldialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, the gross morphological observation and highly significant (p<0.001)
decrease of ulcer index (81.43%) indicated healing effect of the extract on gastric ulcer. 相似文献

Prostaglandins and (PG) have been reported to be an important gastric acid suppressive factor. However, the mechanism underlying
is yet to be clearly established. In vitro study with gastric microsomes in presence of both PGE2 and PGI2 shows a stimulation of gastric H+ K+-ATPase activity below 1X10−6M and 2.5X10−7M concentrations respectively. However, with further increase in concentrations of both PGE2 and PGI2, H+, K+-ATPase activity shows an inhibition but PGI2 completely obliterates the K+ stimulated part of H+, K+-ATPase activity at higher concentration. The H+-ion transport study using chambered frog gastric mucosa shows that both PGE2 and PGI2 inhibit H+-ion transport at 5X10−6 M and 10X10−6M concentrations respectively but the effect of PGI2 is reversible. These differential effects of PGE2 and PGI2 on microsomal H+, K+-ATPase and on H+ transport my be caused by the differential effects of these phospholipid mediators with the gastric mucosal cell membrane.
This in vitro investigation shows the role of prostaglandin (s) as a physiological switch/regulator of gastric H+ ion transport leading to the cessation of gastric acid secretion. 相似文献

ABSTRACTLanguage proficiency is highlighted in the literature on the adjustment and security of international students. India is the second top source country for mobile students globally, but few studies have focused explicitly on students from India. The purpose of this study was to examine the English language experiences of Indian students at New Zealand universities. This mixed-method study utilised a questionnaire (n?=?109) and interviews (n?=?15). Collectively the participants had high levels of confidence and proficiency in English language and adjusted more rapidly than many international students to the new academic environment. Major differences experienced by the participants between India and New Zealand related to unfamiliar forms of academic writing and tasks, and on the role of learning support services. Formal high value assessment was for some the first indication of a problem with writing. While most students adjusted through error-based learning others struggled with argumentation and avoiding plagiarism. These findings have relevance for local and international students. We recommend the use of, and research on, early low-stakes assessment of writing and on effective support services for students transitioning into new academic contexts. 相似文献
