Student-perceived organizational support and perceived employability in the marketing of higher education

In the current context, the need for marketing in institutions of higher education is undeniable. The specification of the student not merely as a ‘customer’ means that traditional marketing no longer has sufficient capacity to explain the behavior of the student body. In this study, a four-level relationship marketing model is tested to check the influence of perceived organizational support (POS) and perceived employability on identification with the institution and the perceived price-quality ratio and how these influence student satisfaction. In addition, the constructs prior to POS and perceived employability are identified, which are explicit enough to enable specific marketing actions to be carried out. As POS is a construct defined for the labor market, its use applied to relational marketing comes up as something innovative.

To this end, Likert scales have been designed and validated to measure these constructs. The results of this test show how the perception of organizational support depends on the relationship of the student body with the administration and management of the center. Likewise, the perception of employability depends on the perceived reputation and the perception of the promotion of employability. Furthermore, it is confirmed that satisfaction is positively related to identification and the perceived price-quality ratio, which in turn are positively related to organizational support and perceived employability.     

The measurement of production efficiency in scientific journals through stochastic frontier analysis models: Application to quantitative economics journals

The importance of a scientific journal is usually established by considering the number of citations received by the papers that the journal publishes. In this way, the number of citations received by a scientific journal can be considered as a measure of the total production of the journal. In this paper, in order to obtain measures of the efficiency in the production process, the approach provided by stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) is considered, and econometric models are proposed. These models estimate a frontier production, which is the maximum achievable number of citations to the journal based on its resources. The efficiency can then be measured by considering the difference between the actual production and the estimated frontier. This approach is applied to the measurement of the productive efficiency of the journals of the JCR social sciences edition database, which belong simultaneously to the areas of “economics” and “social sciences, mathematical methods”.     

Análisis del desarrollo fonológico en sujetos malagueños

Resumen

El presente estudio intenta analizar, desde una perspectiva psicolinguistica, el desarrollo fonológico de niños castellanoparlantes de la ciudad de Málaga, en función de variables como el sexo, el nivel sociocultural y edad de los sujetos, atendiendo, por otra parte, a la influencia de características dialectales del habla andaluza.

Tras la elaboración y administración de una prueba de screening, en condiciones de imitación, se registraron las producciones correctas y distintos procesos de simplificación del habla (sustitución, relativos a la estructura de la sílaba y asimilatorios), no encontrándose diferencias significativas con respecto al sexo, aunque sí en cuanto al nivel sociocultural y a la edad de los sujetos.

Cabe destacar que la influencia del modelo lingüístico andaluz podría enmascarar los patrones evolutivos del desarrollo fonológico infantil. Sin embargo, el hecho de que los sujetos malagueños presenten porcentajes bajos en pronunciación correcta en edades avanzadas, en algunas categorías de fonemas, es debido a la influencia de variantes dialectales, más a que presenten patrones evolutivos más tardíos en cuanto a su capacidad de representación fonológica.

RESUMEN

En 1977 el equipo de estudios para la programación infantil de Televisión Española comenzó a trabajar en un proyecto orientado a elaborar un programa infantil dirigido a un público de 3 a 6 años de un nivel socioeconómico deprimido. Se tomó como modelo, “Sesame Street”, un programa de una cadena americana con unos objetivos pedagógicos determinados emitiéndose en este país. El trabajo que se presenta es una investigación formativa llevada a cabo para proporcionar a esta nueva serie una orientación teórico-práctica lo más acorde posible con la realidad del país.

Fue por tanto necesario realizar algunos cambios e incluir temas ausentes en el programa americano, pero considerados importantes aquí. Finalmente, se describe el esquema ideal de metas pedagógicas de este nuevo programa denominado Barrio Sésamo.     

Diferencias evolutivas en procesamiento de textos mediante una tarea de ordenación de frases

Resumen

Este estudio presenta los resultados de una investigación en la que se describen algunas diferencias evolutivas en el procesamiento de la prosa expositiva. Treinta y cinco chicos de diferentes edades, 12 de 5.^o de E.G.B., 12 de 8.^o de E.G.B, y 11 de 3.^o B.U.P y F.P. (10, 13 y 16 años respectivamente), realizaron una tarea de ordenación de frases para formar un texto coherente. Había un total de tres textos de tipo expositivo, constando cada uno de seis oraciones. Se tomaron varias medidas en cada texto: una primera de ordenación global, otra de supraordenación, una tercera de coherencia local (conexiones entre seis pares de frases), y una última medida de errores de conexión. Los resultados confirman una clara tendencia evolutiva en todas las medidas empleadas. Finalmente, se discuten los resultados relacionándolos con otros estudios que analizan el desarrollo de estrategias de comprensión, y se comentan varias repercusiones educativas del trabajo, así como algunas cuestiones abiertas.     

Factors Affecting Student Choice of Career in Science and Engineering: parallel studies in Australia,Canada, China,England, Japan and Portugal

This paper describes parallel studies carried out in six countries which investigated the factors which influence school students towards careers and higher educational studies in the physical sciences or technology. The studies consisted of a common questionnaire survey, supplemented by student interviews. It reveals differences between scientists and non scientists in regard to their preferred learning styles, to the broad factors which were influential in their career choice and to their self perception against different personality types. Many factors are common across a wide range of countries. Implications of these findings for schools, higher education and government are discussed.     

The Filipino Nursing Students' Dilemmas in Geriatric Care

The continually rising percentage of the elderly population and the demand for geriatric nursing care are dramatically related. While it is true that most undergraduate programs prepare nurses for the care of geriatric patients, most receive limited academic preparation in the nursing curriculum (Williams & Mezey, 2000 Williams , C. , & Mezey , M. This is particularly true in the Philippines where there is no stand-alone geriatric nursing course.

This phenomenological study purports to capture the lived experiences of Filipino nursing students' dilemmas in geriatric care. Five Filipino senior nursing students and three clinical faculty from a comprehensive university in the Philippines were purposely chosen for the study. A two-part instrumentation was used. The first is the robotfoto, a Dutch term which means a cartographic sketch of the subject (Kelchtermans & Ballet, 2002 Kelchtermans , G. , & Ballet , K. ( 2002 ). The micropolitics of teacher induction: A narrative bibliographical study on teacher socialization . The second was a semi-structured face-to-face interview that was recorded with the consent of the participants. The full texts were phenomenologically reduced using a repertory grid to observe both cool and warm analyses, which facilitates the identification of unique conceptual clusters. Findings of this study have described the elements that define student dilemmas in geriatric care. The emerged Students' Dilemmas in Geriatrics Causality Quadrant (SDGCQ), which consists of (a) Foundational Deficit, (b) Psychological Deficit, (c) Relational-Attitudinal Deficit, and (d) Occupational Deficit, are valuable discussion points for needed reforms in the present-day nursing curriculum.     

Coherence estimate between a random and a periodic signal: Bias, variance, analytical critical values, and normalizing transforms

The present work deals with recent results on the sampling distribution of the magnitude-squared coherence (also called just coherence) estimate between a random (Gaussian) and a periodic signal, in order to obtain analytical critical values, alternative expressions for the probability density function (PDF) as well as the variance and bias of the estimate. A comparison with the more general case of coherence estimation when both signals are Gaussian was also provided. The results indicate that the smaller the true coherence (TC) values the closer both distributions become. The behaviour of variance and bias as a function of the number of data segments and the TC is similar for both coherence estimates. Additionally, the effect of a normalizing function (Fisher's z transform) in the coherence estimated between a random and a periodic signal was also evaluated and normality has been nearly achieved. However, the variance was less equalized in comparison with coherence estimate between two Gaussian signals.

Effectiveness of additional representations for the search result presentation on the web

The presentation of search results on the web has been dominated by the textual form of document representation. On the other hand, the document’s visual aspects such as the layout, colour scheme, or presence of images have been studied in a limited context with regard to their effectiveness of search result presentation. This article presents a comparative evaluation of textual and visual forms of document representation as additional components of document surrogates. A total of 24 people were recruited for our task-based user study. The experimental results suggest that an increased level of document representation available in the search results can facilitate users’ interaction with a search interface. The results also suggest that the two forms of additional representations are likely beneficial to users’ information searching process in different contexts.
