The role of aggression and social competence in children's perceptions of the child–teacher relationship

The role of children's aggression and three indices of social competence (peer‐preferred behavior, teacher‐preferred behavior, and school adjustment) in children's perceived relationships with their teachers was assessed. Participants were 1,432 third through fifth graders (688 males, 744 females) and their teachers. The results from hierarchical regression analyses showed statistically significant interaction effects. Poor school adjustment was associated with more negatively perceived child teacher relationships for boys than for girls. In addition, the perceived child–teacher relationship among aggressive children was more favorable among those with high levels of school adjustment than among those who were poorly adjusted at school. Implications for school psychologists and teachers are discussed. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Toward a more comprehensive approach to evaluating teaching effectiveness: supplementing student evaluations of teaching with pre–post learning measures

The use of student evaluations of teaching (SETs) to assess teaching effectiveness remains controversial. Without clear guidelines regarding how to best document effective teaching, faculty members may wonder how to convincingly demonstrate teaching effectiveness in preparation for promotion and tenure review. Based on a study that examined the relations among student grades, learning, and SETs, we identify a relatively unencumbered approach to documenting teaching effectiveness more comprehensively than through the use of SETs alone. Students enrolled in eight sections of general psychology (N = 165) completed pre‐ and post‐ measures of learning, SETs, and a brief demographic questionnaire. Results of a regression analysis provided partial support for the notion that SETs and learning measures assess distinct aspects of teaching effectiveness. In preparing documentation for promotion and tenure review, faculty members should consider including measures of student learning along with SETs in order to document teaching effectiveness more convincingly and comprehensively.

Co-Teaching and Cognitive Spaces: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching Science to Nonmajors

This paper describes a course, Science, Technology and the Public in the Nineteenth Century, which is both interdisciplinary and co-taught by a biologist and an historian. The rationale for including social history in such a course is to make nonscience majors more aware of both the process of science and its relationship to society. An example of the social history component of the course is offered in a discussion of Louis Pasteur and his adulation by the French public. Since Pasteur's popularity was based as much on nonscientific as on scientific factors, we use his career to illustrate concepts about science in its cultural context that we want our students to understand. The course's content is then presented with reference to objectives we hope to achieve. Finally we indicate how, with our varied backgrounds, co-teaching this course led to a sharing of our cognitive spaces and how this was a positive experience for both ourselves and our students.     

Male vulnerability to reading disability is not likely to be a myth: a call for new data

Whether boys are more vulnerable than girls to reading disabilities (RD) is controversial. We review studies that were designed to minimize ascertainment bias in the selection of individuals with RD. These include population-based studies that identified children with RD by objective, unbiased methods and studies that examined the gender ratios among the affected relatives of those diagnosed with RD. We conclude that even when ascertainment biases are minimized, there is still a significant preponderance of boys with RD, although the gender ratio of the affected relatives of those with RD manifests the weakest male bias. Furthermore, we demonstrate that potentially confounding factors such as attentional or neurological problems, race, IQ, and severity of RD cannot account for the observed gender bias. We end with a clarion call to future researchers to (a) consider analyzing gender differences by means of more than one definition of RD, (b) compare gender ratios when boys and girls are ranked against the performance of their own gender as opposed to an average across genders, and (c) report group differences in variability and effect sizes of obtained gender ratios.     

Building a retrospective collection in pharmacy: a brief history of the literature with some considerations for U.S. health sciences library professionals

This paper argues that historical works in pharmacy are important tools for the clinician as well as the historian. With this as its operative premise, delineating the tripartite aspects of pharmacy as a business enterprise, a science, and a profession provides a conceptual framework for primary and secondary resource collecting. A brief history and guide to those materials most essential to a historical collection in pharmacy follows. Issues such as availability and cost are discussed and summarized in checklist form. In addition, a glossary of important terms is provided as well as a list of all the major U.S. dispensatories and their various editions. This paper is intended to serve as a resource for those interested in collecting historical materials in pharmacy and pharmaco-therapeutics as well as provide a history that gives context to these classics in the field. This should provide a rationale for selective retrospective collection development in pharmacy.     

Voluntary use of online study questions as a function of previous minimal use requirements and learner aptitude

This study investigates voluntary use of online study questions, the relationship of study question use to examination performance, and the relationship of aptitude to study question use following an initial phase during which students either received course points for passing mastery quizzes or for completing a designated number of study questions. The results indicate a) students who first received points for completing study questions later made greater voluntary use of study questions, b) less able readers made less voluntary use of study questions than more able readers, and c) less able readers performed better on course examinations when awarded course points for completing a required number of study questions rather than quizzes.
