Counselling expectations of international students

International students not only face the normal adjustment problems of young adulthood but also the adjustment to a different culture. A random sample of 100 colleges and universities was contacted. International students enrolled at the institutions completed a questionnaire designed to assess the counselling preferences of international students. Results are discussed in terms of desirable counsellor characteristics and implications for counsellor training. Suggestions are made for facilitating counselling with international students.

Multicollinearity and testing questions of sex equity

Multiple regression is being used by some investigators to determine the unique statistical relevance of potential sex bias for various groups of individuals. The following article shows that the presence of multicollinearity among the independent variables can cause misleading interpretations of the resulting regression weight for sex coded as a dummy variable. An alternative approach is proposed with an example to demonstrate the interpretation of the results. Questions are raised concerning the interpretation of some previous research.     

Variations in goal priorities of academic departments: A test of Holland's theory

This study investigated the relative importance which six groups of academic departments attached to five institutional goal dimensions. The six groups were formed on the basis of Holland's theory of vocational choice and the five goal dimensions were developed from a factor analysis of eleven goal statements. A stepwise, multiple discriminant analysis revealed significant differences between the six groups of academic departments on the Research-Graduate and Quality Education goal dimensions. These two dimensions produced significant differentiation in eleven of the fifteen possible group comparisons. The findings suggest tentatively that Holland's theory of vocational choice can assist in the interpretation of varying goal priorities within the academic community. Suggestions are offered to indicate how this theory might be employed by university administrators and in subsequent research on the administration of academic departments and the complex roles of their chairmen.

随着信息在人们生活和社会发展中的作用发生变化,图书馆和图书馆员的角色也经历从守护者向门户再向领路人的转变。历史上,图书馆和图书馆员作为守护者为保护和传承人类文化做出了贡献,但在社会服务方面主要是为少数精英阶层提供服务;信息、知识、学习被认为是精英阶层的特权,社会大众被认为没有必要获取信息。第二次工业革命时期,人们普遍认识到基本文化素养的必要性,西方社会也逐渐形成共识,即确保每个社会成员至少接受过初等教育;此后,随着技术进步,印刷成本降低,信息能被更多人获取和利用;公共图书馆开始普及并向社会公众开放,图书馆和图书馆员发挥门户的作用,帮助人们克服获取信息的障碍;进入数字时代,图书馆仍然发挥门户的作用,确保任何人无论其身份、财富、背景如何,都不应被排除在信息获取之外。人类社会进入信息时代,信息极大丰富与信息稀缺一样,给信息获取带来了种种问题,人们需要使用批判性思维来面对海量的信息资源;图书馆需充分发挥领路人的作用,帮助社会公众提升信息素养,实现对丰富信息的有效利用,助力创建更强大、更公平、更具创新性的社会。     

The Effect of Team‐Based Learning on Student Attitudes and Satisfaction

We examined student attitudes toward a team‐based learning method known as the readiness assurance process encompassing team exams to model how student satisfaction is initially shaped and subsequently changed over time as a function of scholastic performance and perceived development of professional skills (PS). We found that students were generally positively disposed toward the learning method and recognized its benefits in terms of developing teamwork skills. A regression analysis of student responses to an instrument distributed directly after each of four quizzes given over the course of a semester leads to the inferences that satisfaction with the method depends minimally upon the immediate feedback provided by student performance on a quiz and more critically upon student perceptions of how it has enhanced their PS. There is also shown to be a strong carryover effect in satisfaction with the method in successive uses. The results suggest that student attitudes are shaped by multiple, high‐level goals, and not just scholastic performance. The study also evidences the need to study learning interventions over multiple uses rather than through a one‐shot design.
