The preparation for the World Conference on Education for All at the beginning of 1990 once again showed clearly the importance of education for development in the countries of the Third World. This article explores the systemic place of education in the process of development. With the help of factor analysis it treats the following individual questions: Is education, or basic education, an independent factor? Are the many development indicators determined by general factors? Is basic education one of these factors? An analysis is made of development indicators from 1960 to 1984 drawn from World Bank reports on 38 sub-Saharan African countries. Two sets of economic, demographic and educational data have been examined: the first relates to the year 1984 (or nearest available); the second contains two years, adding an earlier set from the nearest available date to 1960. The analysis of the later set reveals five factors: general modernization, population growth, economic development, pupil-teacher ratio, and food supply to the general population. Education is not an independent factor in this list. Using the data sets from both years, seven factors are revealed. After diagonal rotation these are: basic education, degree of urbanization, pupil-teacher ratio, average standard of living attained, economic growth, service sector, food production per head, population growth, and employment in modern sectors.  相似文献

There is a growing body of evidence that physical activity has under certain circumstances a positive influence on actual well-being. Actors in health sports should hence be able to investigate their actions regarding the influence on the well-being of the participants. The purpose of this review is to give an overview of the existing methods of measurement concerning actual well-being and to publish recommendations for the practical application. Therefore the search was narrowed down to multidimensional questionnaires, measuring the actual well-being. Five instruments, e. g. Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), “Befindlichkeitsskalen” (BFS), Profile of Mood States (POMS) are finally reviewed after an introduction which outlines the categories of well-being and reviews the mechanisms which have been suggested to explain the beneficial effects of exercise. The questionnaires vary sizably concerning the theoretical background, the psychometric properties and their structure. The suitability for various domains can be verified regarding these differences. The POMS for example can be recommended because of the international comparability, the PANAS because of the time-efficient use and the BFS because of their extensive use in the German-speaking world.  相似文献

Based on the assumption that children can benefit from early childhood education, the present paper investigates if the admission to day care and the selection of the type of day care (child care centers and home day care) is socially selective. In doing so, the paper analyzes how the socioeconomic and immigrant background of families influences which type of day care is used. For children under the age of three, the social background of families does influence if a child receives day care, but this influences diminishes the older the children get. The type of day care (child care centers and home day care) did not differ according to social background. The paper closes with a discussion of the challenges and potentials for development of educating children under the age of three.  相似文献

This article is a general introduction into the special issue of Archival Science on “archiving research data”. It summarizes the different contributions and gives an overview of the main issues in this special field of archiving. One of the leading questions is how and why research data archives differ from public record offices. In the past, the developments in these two worlds have been rather separate. There are however signs that they are converging in the digital world. In particular, this can be seen in the areas of metadata and Internet dissemination as these are strongly influenced by the rapid changes in information technology. These changes have also led to important new developments in the infrastructure of research data to which special attention is paid. New concepts such as collaboratories, data curation, Open Access and the Open Archives Initiative are discussed.

ABSTRACT

This paper involves a discussion of the results of a recent research project where I interviewed athletes who play on a Canadian University's sport teams. The interviews were fairly open‐ended, exploring the athletes’ interpretations of what makes a situation an ethical dilemma and then what moral reasoning process they use in resolving the dilemmas they face. The interviews were analysed utilizing a hermeneutic approach. In analysing the transcribed interviews, I uncovered the layers of text in an attempt to interpret the athletes’ conception of ethical dilemmas. Then I focused on the reasoning process the athletes articulated in their attempts to resolve ethical dilemmas. This process required successive ‘readings’ where I attempted to relate knowledge from moral theory/moral philosophy to the words and experiences of the athletes interviewed.

This research has the potential to be both theoretically and practically significant. The theoretical significance of the research lies in the application of a study of moral theory/moral philosophy to actual ethical dilemmas faced by athletes. Although moral philosophy is a well‐established scholarly discipline, the application of insights gleaned from a study of this discipline to the practice of sport has not received much attention in the scholarly literature. Most of the empirical research conducted in the area of sport and moral reasoning has focused on theories of moral development, i.e. Piaget, Kohlberg, and so forth (Booth, 1981; Figley, 1984; Romance, 1988; Brandi, 1989; Shields & Bredemeier, 1995), while most of the research concerned with moral theory/moral philosophy has been solely conceptual in nature (Shea, 1996; Arnold, 1984; Fraleigh, 1984; Zeigler, 1984; Feezell, 1986). The research presented in this paper integrates a naturalistic framework, specifically hermeneutic analysis, with conceptual knowledge derived from moral theory/moral philosophy.

The research also has the potential to have significant practical implications. My objective is to determine what sort of moral reasons athletes provide when they attempt to resolve ethical dilemmas encountered in their sport. Understanding these reasons has significant implications in that teachers and coaches could facilitate the development of the critical thinking skills and dispositions required in moral reasoning if they were aware of where their athletes were in need of guidance.

Even more than other European countries, Germany must fear a serious future skills shortage and lack of experts. Therefore, increasing the proportion of high school graduates who wish to study at a university is a clear political objective. The aim of this paper is to identify variables that hinder or support the decision to pursue university studies. We used longitudinal data of 23,000 graduates of upper secondary school of the years 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008 to analyze how tuition fees (which are charged only in some of the German federal states), family status, and students?? own cost-benefit analyses impacted their decision in favor or against taking up university studies. Results showed that the subjective costs of higher education were highest for persons of low social economic background, and for women. Also, the introduction of tuition fees in some federal states in the year 2006 lowered the percentage of students who wanted to enter higher education. Contrary to our expectations, however, this effect was observed in all federal states, irrespective of whether they had introduced tuition fees or not. Our results suggest that participation in higher education can be increased by both lowering (social and psychological) costs and raising (social and psychological) benefits of higher education.  相似文献

I contend that there is a logical connection between moral education and physical education. This argument is based on acknowledging the importance of competitive activities in the physical education programme for students to recognize success in whatever physical activity they are learning to perform. I emphasize a return to the root word, com-petitio , to strive together. To strive together, students must respect each other in their mutual quest to better themselves. I propose also that the physical education class provides an arena for practising moral behaviour. I examine the counter-argument that sporting contexts have frequently been arenas for immoral behaviour. I also suggest that the physical education class provides a context for practising moral behaviour which is more conducive to this practice than the contexts provided by other subjects.  相似文献

Learnscapes are a recent initiative of the New South Wales Department of Education and Training (NSW DET). They are generally school ground features, e.g., an edible garden, a poetry corner or a wildlife corridor, where a learning program has been designed to permit users to interact with the environment. The learning programs are to meet syllabi learning outcomes including environmental education. Learnscape design, development, and use are to involve students, teachers and the community. Teachers' perceptions of the value and impact of learnscapes in two NSW DET pilot schools are reported, as well as their self-reported involvement and use. These varied considerably, despite the majority of teachers extolling the value of learnscapes. Several 'barriers' to the effective use of learnscapes surfaced. The relationship of learnscapes to environmental education was not uppermost in most teachers' minds. Explanations are suggested and pedagogical implications discussed.  相似文献
