State Data Centers: improving access to census information

"The U.S. Bureau of the Census created the State Data Center program in 1978 to improve public access to census information. This article discusses the background, structure, and services of that program; the role of libraries in the program; and future directions in State Data Center/library relationships. Serials standards work: the next frontier

Serials, one of the more complicated areas of library technical endeavors, has lacked the benefit of standards for a long time. Even now, with standards beginning to be available, the majority of institutions are not working within standard serials formats. A survey to determine the use of serials standards in libraries was conducted in 1988 by the American Library Association, Resources and Technical Services Division, Serials Section, Committee to Study Serials Standards. In the spring of 1988 a survey was sent to a group encompassing the Association of Research Libraries members, CONSER participants, United States Newspaper Program participants, Microform Project libraries, and some vendors and librarians who attended the Committee meetings on a regular basis. The survey questionnaire assessed the current level of serials standards awareness of librarians and vendors. Topics included the type of serials systems used, standards relevant to serials control and union listing and whether or not they are implemented, types and levels of training staff received in the application of standards, benefits of the standards, and areas where standards are most needed.

为低年级学生插上写诗的翅膀

任何文学创作都是想象的结晶。如果一个人想象力枯竭便意味着他创作之路的枯竭,那么,作为语文教师培养学生的想象力尤为重要,所以,我尝试让低年级学生练写小诗。诗歌这一文学体裁可以用最简练生动的语言描绘意境,表达思想,激发学生的思维。实践证明,学生不但对写话产生了兴趣,而且丰富了想象力,为中年级的写话奠定了良好基础。一、利用教材,让孩子们仿写小诗。教材是最好的范本,孩子们在美美的背诵课文时,已经对小诗产生了浓厚的兴趣。这时,见机引导孩子们仿写,孩子们的情感是愉悦的,思维是开放     

论缓冲溶液的制备

凡实验室涉及到生物学和化学的水溶液体系时,pH和离子强度(I)是两个极为重要的可变量。由于酸—碱混合物的存在,这两个参量往往相互依赖。控制pH值的通常方法是使用缓冲剂。它们是由那些对于溶液离子行为影响不大、且不活泼的稳定电解质来配制的。本文提出的方法适用于计算某种酸及其盐混合物的pH值和离子强度;或与此相反,用于计算配制预知pH值和离子强度(I)所需酸及其盐的相当量。这种计算方法很实用,具有启发性和直观教学的价值,在许多普通的可编程序计算器上容易完成。     

Science Letters:Discovery of ultrahigh-T spinel-garnet granulite with pure CO_2 fluid inclusions from the Altay orogenic belt, NW China

We first report discovery of the spinel-garnet-orthopyroxene granulite with pure CO2 fluid inclusions from the Fuyun region of the late Paleozoic Altay orogenic belt in Central Asia, NW China. The rock is characterized by an assemblage of garnet, orthopyroxene, spinel, cordierite, biotite, plagioclase and quartz. Symplectites of orthopyroxene and spinel, and orthopyroxene and cordierite indicate decompression under UHT conditions. Mineral chemistry shows that the or-thopyroxenes have high XMg and A12O3 contents (up to 9.23 wt%). Biotites are enriched in TiO2 and XMg and are stable under granulite facies conditions. The garnet and quartz from the rock carry monophase fluid inclusions which show peak melting temperatures of around -56.7℃, indicating a pure CO2 species being presented during the ultrahigh-T metamorphism in the Altay orogenic belt. The inclusions homogenize into a liquid phase at temperatures around 15.3-23.8℃ translating into CO2 densities of the order of 0.86-0.88 g/cm3. Based on prelim
