Stress and women

Stress-tension-pain occur more often in health disorders of women than anywhere in the entire spectrum of human illness. No where is the effect of rapid change more apparent than in the changing role of today's women who are subjected to pressures from all sides. Now a days women virtually take part occupy positions, in day to day activities similar to their male counterparts. An outline of conceptual consideration, biochemical overview of stress and intricacies of coping mechanisms are delineated from the point of view of stress situations in female (during reproductive life span) peculiar to them only viz menarche, menstrual cycle, pregnancy-eventualities of pregnancy-labour-delivery, purperium, postpartum psychosis, abortions-induced, spontaneous, menopause. Lipid profile and oxidative stress status as biochemical responses in these stresses were investigated. As expected observed maximal/minimal biochemical responses well correlated with peak time and at termination of stress. Present day emphasis is on menstrual regulation by intake of oral contraceptive to improve health if women prefer not to bleed every month and hormone replacement therapy for elderly women to improve post menopausal quality of life and avoiding menstrual problems at the same time.     

Can High School Achievement Tests Serve to Select College Students?

Postsecondary schools have traditionally relied on admissions tests such as the SAT and ACT to select students. With high school achievement assessments in place in many states, it is important to ascertain whether scores from those exams can either supplement or supplant conventional admissions tests. In this study we examined whether the Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) high school tests could serve as a useful predictor of college performance. Stepwise regression analyses with a predetermined order of variable entry revealed that AIMS generally did not account for additional performance variation when added to high school grade-point average (HSGPA) and SAT. However, in a cohort of students that took the test for graduation purposes, AIMS did account for about the same proportion of variance as SAT when added to a model that included HSGPA. The predictive value of both SAT and AIMS was generally the same for Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian American students. The ramifications of universities using high school achievement exams as predictors of college success, in addition to or in lieu of traditional measures, are discussed.     

Development of the ontology of patient management technological records for modeling of clinical workflows in a general hospital

This paper presents an ontological approach to generating automated medical technological records (MTRs). The medical organizational TR meta-ontology has been developed based on the paper variant of 63 technological records that are used at the Medical Center of the Bank of Russia. The paper describes the key elements of an automated MTR. The MTR ontology for bronchial asthma attack is used as an example.     

Multi-criteria choice in the attribute space of large dimension: Multi-method technology PAKS-M

This paper describes a new multi-method technology PAKS-M (Progressive Aggregation of the Classified Situations by many Methods) for the multi-criteria choice. This technology provides reducing the dimension of the attribute space, constructing several hierarchical systems of composite criteria and an integral quality index that aggregates initial attributes as well as the classification and/or ordering of multiattribute objects using different combinations of several decision-making methods. The technology is based on the knowledge of experts and/or the preferences of a decision maker (DM). It significantly reduces the time and complexity of solution of a multi-criteria choice task, and allows a decision maker to conduct a meaningful analysis of the results. This technology was used for the multi-criteria selection of a prospective computing complex.     

Books,Bytes, and Buildings: The Academic Library's Unique Role in Improving Student Success

Student persistence and completion are paramount in higher education, and institutions are employing targeted programs and initiatives to address these concerns. The academic library can play an especially important role in these efforts, given its unique interdisciplinary mission and its integrated instructional programs. With a foundation in both higher education and library and information science literatures, this article describes how one academic library engaged in cross-campus programs, partnerships, and initiatives to contribute to student success efforts. Other libraries may find these examples useful as they consider how to frame their work in the context of their institutions’ student persistence efforts.     

Christian Higher Education: An Education that Liberates

In this wide-ranging review essay, the author engages Christian Higher Education: A Global Reconnaissance, a book edited by J. Carpenter, P. L. Glanzer, and N. S. Lantinga (2014). His remarks focus especially on the five chapters of the book that survey Christian higher education in nations where he has direct experience: Brazil, Kenya, India, South Korea, and the United States. An extended reflection, both philosophical and practical, is then offered on a common task of Christian higher education across many cultures: how to develop and sustain a holistic education that promotes Kingdom prospering, above and beyond national and commercial purposes. He makes the case for a liberating education that seeks to instill a dynamic combination of integrative thinking and character formation. The essay ends with practical advice as the author encourages fellow educators to focus their efforts on faculty development, general education, and cross-cultural partnerships as the keys to building and sustaining a liberating education.
