Pre-primary education in Tanzania: Observations from urban and rural classrooms

This study examined the relationship between pre-primary educational policy and actual practice in Tanzania. Policy relevant to pre-primary education was analyzed and 15 pre-primary lessons from two urban and two rural schools were videotaped. Although the national educational policy specifies the same standards for pre-primary education regardless of location, there were considerable differences across schools. Compared to urban classes, rural ones had considerably less space, larger group sizes, less favorable teacher/pupil ratios, fewer instructional resources and less qualified teachers. Teacher professional qualifications appeared to influence the quality of classroom interaction more than the physical setting and resources.     

Ancient asexuals

Although asexual reproduction is well represented among invertebrates many of these animals seem to get the benefits of sexual reproduction by resorting to sex periodically. There are however a very small group of animals in which there is no evidence at all of sexual reproduction for the past millions of years. These ‘ancient asexuals’ include bdelloid rotifers, Darwinulid ostracods, arbuscular micorrhizae, and some species of walking stick insect, aphids and brine shrimp. Molecular biologists claim that the ancient asexual status of theses organisms is affirmed by the high levels of allelic divergence, loss of transposable elements and absence of meiosis-associated genes.     

Mahlburg’s work on crank functions

Karl Mahlburg brilliantly showed the importance of crank functions in partition congruences that were originally guessed by Freeman Dyson. Ramanujan’s partition functions are the centre of these works. Not only for the theory on cranks, but for many other researchers in India Ramanujan’s work inspired their career in mathematics.

1一道问题引发了学生探究的火花在讲《燃烧和灭火》这一课题内容之后,有一个学生向我提了一个问题：为什么火柴燃烧时,火柴梗头向下,可以燃烧完,而火柴梗头向上却会很快熄灭呢？我给这个学生作了一个简单的解答：“火柴在燃烧时,火焰对上面未燃着的部分有预热作用,使火柴杆上面的部分达到着火点,满足了燃烧的两个条件．火柴就能燃烧完全。”
