A case study demonstrating how a poorly functioning academic was helped to successfully re‐organize his life and his work is described. More efficient management of time was the means through which this re‐organization took place. This study documents the experiences of parents raising African American children who have been identified as gifted. There is a small but growing body of research exploring the experiences and issues of gifted African American children. Parents play the most significant role in a child's development; however, parents of gifted African American children are not currently represented in the literature. This study utilized semi‐structured interviews with the parent or parents from 12 families to explore their experiences of rearing their gifted African American children. Particular attention was addressed to issues surrounding their children's academic and social experiences, including interactions with school, family, and community. Implications are elucidated for individuals working with this population, and suggestions for future research are provided.  相似文献

The importance of Rotter's concept of locus of control is discussed and its educational implications outlined. A procedure involving relaxation, suggestion, and imagery (RSI) is described and its use in modifying perception of locus of control postulated. This hypothesis is tested in a study with 36 final-year secondary school students who were paired according to their scores on Rotter's I-E (internal-external) scale. Members of each pair were allocated at random to either an experimental group, which experienced three half-hour RSI sessions distributed over a 3-week period, or a control group which spent the same amount of time in discussing ways of modifying locus of control. Immediate posttreatment administration of the I-E scale indicated a definite shift toward increased internal control by subjects of both groups, with the experimental group's scores being significantly better. A further administration of the I-E scale after 12 months confirmed that this superiority had been maintained.  相似文献

After a review of the literature on the use of hypnosis in the educational environment, the general value of the trance state as a means of accessing inner resources is outlined. One particular technique, the Diagnostic Trance, is explained in detail and its use in the university environment illustrated through three case studies. One of these concerns the lecturing anxiety of a new staff member, another the inability of a lecturer to set down material on paper, and a third the difficulty experienced by a lecturer in speaking out at meetings. Attention is drawn both to the simplicity of the technique and the absence of negative side effects.  相似文献
