Examining the Validity of Standards-Based Assessments for Initially Fluent Students and Former English Language Learners

To date, assessment validity research on non-native English speaking students in the United States has focused exclusively on those who are presently English language learners (ELLs). However, little, if any, research has been conducted on two other sizable groups of language minority students: (a) bilingual or multilingual students who were already English proficient when they entered the school system (IFEPs), and (b) former English language learners, those students who were once classified as ELLs but are now reclassified as being English proficient (RFEPs). This study investigated the validity of several standards-based assessments in mathematics and science for these two student groups and found a very high degree of score comparability, when compared with native English speakers, for the IFEPs, whereas a moderate to high degree of score comparability was observed for the RFEPs. Thus, test scores for these two groups on the assessments we studied appear to be valid indicators of their content knowledge, to a degree similar to that of native English speakers.     

TECHNOLOGY IN HIGHER EDUCATION: EXPLORING DISTANCE LEARNING FROM A CONSTRUCT/VIST PERSPECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which distance learning (distance learning vs. traditional) may influence undergraduate education majors’ emerging constructivist perspective. Elementary education majors at 2 universities (N = 102) volunteered to complete questionnaires. The 3 independent variables were traditional vs. distance learning, whether or not ever enrolled in distance learning, and instructor difference. The 3 dependent variables were concerned with what the instructor provided; what the instructor demonstrated; and what students believed they learned. A Multiple Analysis of Variance (Manova) compared the 3 independent variables across the 3 dependent variables and indicated that students in traditional classrooms rated what the instructor provided, what the instructor demonstrated, and what students believed they learned significantly greater than students in distance learning classrooms. An interpretation suggests that distance learning technology may hold potential for facilitating undergraduate education majors’ emerging constructivist perspective.

美国黑人女性文学在20世纪80年代开始传入中国。国内对它的介绍,从时间上大致可分为三个阶段。每一阶段都有自己的译介特点,这些阶段特点又和当时国内思想文化背景密切相关。纵观黑人女性文学在中国传播的20几年,国内对它的翻译与研究既取得了丰硕的成果,又一定程度上存在着局限性。

Piecing Together the Puzzle of Pictorial Representation: How Jigsaw Puzzles Index Metacognitive Development

Jigsaw puzzles are ubiquitous developmental toys in Western societies, used here to examine the development of metarepresentation. For jigsaw puzzles this entails understanding that individual pieces, when assembled, produce a picture. In Experiment 1, 3- to 5-year-olds (N = 117) completed jigsaw puzzles that were normal, had no picture, or comprised noninterlocking rectangular pieces. Pictorial puzzle completion was associated with mental and graphical metarepresentational task performance. Guide pictures of completed pictorial puzzles were not useful. In Experiment 2, 3- to 4-year-olds (N = 52) completed a simplified task, to choose the correct final piece. Guide-use associated with age and specifically graphical metarepresentation performance. We conclude that the pragmatically natural measure of jigsaw puzzle completion ability demonstrates general and pictorial metarepresentational development at 4 years.

内蒙古西部有入声的汉语方言形容词生动形式丰富多彩，具有浓厚的方言特色，很值得研究。笔者着眼于词的结构方式，将该方言形容词构词生动形式分为重叠式、加缀式、兼用式、连用式4大类，18个小类。在简要分析词的结构方式和构词过程的基础上，总结了每种小类型的结构式。     

Toy libraries

Toys are not just for playing. Toys are the tools of play that help children develop their social awareness, imagination, visual motor capabilities and thinking processes. Play is a very serious activity for children worldwide and often represents a primary and valuable means of learning. Since many toys are important learning instruments, children should have easy access to appropriate toys in order to explore and choose those which interest them. In addition, parents need a place where they can consult with someone about what toys are appropriate for their child's development. Toy libraries provide this service.

应对WTO--大学英语教学与学习的思考

随着中国加入WTO,现实对英语教学与学习提出了更高,更新的要求,要应对这种挑战,英语教学与学习必须走出“为英语的考试”,“为考试的英语”这样一个误区。要营造一个符合语言学习与教学的良好社会氛围,使之成为学习与教学的支撑点。要强调语言材料的积累而不是应考经验与技巧的积累。英语的社会化是英语教学与学习摆脱单一,单调的课堂教学模式的途径;社会化的英语是运用英语的最有效方式。
