Travelling with golf clubs: The influence of baggage on the trip decision-making process

Sports participation often requires the use of specialist equipment and for many sport tourists this is transported to the destination to aid convenience and enjoyment of participation. Yet, to date, there has been little consideration of the influence that travelling with sporting equipment can have on the trip decision-making process. This paper focuses on golf tourism, said to be the largest sector of the sports tourism market and examines the influence that travelling with golf equipment has on aspects of the trip such as travel mode and opportunities for participation. Based on a longitudinal-grounded theory study, this paper concludes that packing sporting equipment can stimulate negotiations associated with participation. Furthermore, the nature of the sporting equipment to be carried can determine the choices made regarding the travel modes used to reach and move around holiday destinations and thus directly influence the trip decision-making process.     

The politics of media policy: how political?

This article reviews three recently published books which make an important contribution, in their different ways, to our understanding of major media policy issues in the digital era. They are all concerned with the core issue of how well media policy serves the public interest. They exemplify different approaches to the study of media policy with regard to how political they are in their content. The first two draw strongly on political science. The first might be best described as critically engaged and has an ideologically sensitive perspective on media policy in the United Kingdom and the United States. The second adopts a policy studies approach to examine the introduction of digital TV in the United Kingdom. The third, written by a media sociologist, provides a comparative study of policies for public service TV in six European countries. It offers rather less political analysis, but presents a useful policy content-focused approach. The article concludes by calling for more work on the development of policies that will ensure the continued fulfilment in the digital era of public service journalistic functions and provision of public service content.

An educative intervention: assisting in the self-assessment of archival practice in 12 community service organisations

There is a need for systemic improvement in the management of care records in Australia. This has been highlighted by government inquiries, media coverage and research literature relating to the significance of records for those who experience out-of-home care. The Who Am I? project – an interdisciplinary collaboration between historians, social workers and archivists – sought to address this concern and support positive change in 12 participating community service organisations (CSOs) in Victoria. To provide a framework for practice improvement, research archivists on the Who Am I? team designed the Self-Assessment Tool for Archives. Based on an action research methodology and influenced by the Records Continuum, this was an ‘educative intervention’ for the CSOs, as well as the participating archivists.
