A paired reading program was implemented for 195 Hong Kong preschoolers (mean age = 4.7 years) and their parents from families with a wide range of family income. The preschoolers were randomly assigned to experimental or waitlist control groups. The parents in the experimental group received 12 sessions of school-based training on paired reading in 7 weeks. They were required to do paired reading with their children for at least four times in each of these 7 weeks. At the end of the program, the preschoolers in the experimental group had better performance in word recognition and reading fluency than their counterparts in the control group. They were also reported as more competent and motivated in reading by their parents. More importantly, the program had many favorable effects on parents. Parents in the experimental group had higher self-efficacy in helping their children to be better readers and learners. They also reported that they had better relationships with their children. Their changes in relationships and self-efficacy were found to mediate the program impact on some of the child outcomes. However, family income did not moderate the effectiveness of the program. This letter proposes a categorization matrix to analyze the playing style of a computer game player for a shooting game genre. Our aim is to use human-centered modeling as a strategy for adaptive games based on entertainment measure to evaluate the playing experience. We utilized a self-organizing map (SOM) to cluster the player's style with the data obtained while playing the game. We further argued that style-based adaptation contributes to higher enjoyment, and this is reflected in our experiment using a supervised multilayered perceptron (MLP) network. 相似文献

Interviews with key scientists who had conducted research on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), together with analysis
of media reports, documentaries and other literature published during and after the SARS epidemic, revealed many interesting
aspects of the nature of science (NOS) and scientific inquiry in contemporary scientific research in the rapidly growing field
of molecular biology. The story of SARS illustrates vividly some NOS features advocated in the school science curriculum,
including the tentative nature of scientific knowledge, theory-laden observation and interpretation, multiplicity of approaches
adopted in scientific inquiry, the inter-relationship between science and technology, and the nexus of science, politics,
social and cultural practices. The story also provided some insights into a number of NOS features less emphasised in the
school curriculum—for example, the need to combine and coordinate expertise in a number of scientific fields, the intense
competition between research groups (suspended during the SARS crisis), the significance of affective issues relating to intellectual
honesty and the courage to challenge authority, the pressure of funding issues on the conduct of research and the ‘peace of
mind’ of researchers, These less emphasised elements provided empirical evidence that NOS knowledge, like scientific knowledge
itself, changes over time. They reflected the need for teachers and curriculum planners to revisit and reconsider whether
the features of NOS currently included in the school science curriculum are fully reflective of the practice of science in
the 21st century. In this paper, we also report on how we made use of extracts from the news reports and documentaries on
SARS, together with episodes from the scientists’ interviews, to develop a multimedia instructional package for explicitly
teaching the prominent features of NOS and scientific inquiry identified in the SARS research.

This paper presents an investigation about how to automatically formulate effective queries using full or partial relevance information (i.e., the terms that are in relevant documents) in the context of relevance feedback (RF). The effects of adding relevance information in the RF environment are studied via controlled experiments. The conditions of these controlled experiments are formalized into a set of assumptions that form the framework of our study. This framework is called idealized relevance feedback (IRF) framework. In our IRF settings, we confirm the previous findings of relevance feedback studies. In addition, our experiments show that better retrieval effectiveness can be obtained when (i) we normalize the term weights by their ranks, (ii) we select weighted terms in the top K retrieved documents, (iii) we include terms in the initial title queries, and (iv) we use the best query sizes for each topic instead of the average best query size where they produce at most five percentage points improvement in the mean average precision (MAP) value. We have also achieved a new level of retrieval effectiveness which is about 55–60% MAP instead of 40+% in the previous findings. This new level of retrieval effectiveness was found to be similar to a level using a TREC ad hoc test collection that is about double the number of documents in the TREC-3 test collection used in previous works. 相似文献

This study used concept map content analysis and interviews to gain insights into the knowledge organisation and knowledge
processing of pre-service teachers. Forty-eight preservice teachers of elementary science from a teachers’ training college
in Sarawak, Malaysia, participated in this study. Correlations between achievement and five concept map characteristics showed
that there were significant positive correlations (p<.01) between achievement and: the number of appropriate links; the average number of appropriate concepts per cluster; and,
the hierarchy score of subjects’ concept maps, and significant negative correlations (p<.01) between achievement and: the number of inappropriate links; and, the average number of inappropriate concepts per cluster.
Interviews with high-achievers and lowachievers revealed that there were differences in the way they processed knowledge during
concept mapping. The high-achievers were more thorough than were the low-achievers in cognitive processing of knowledge, taking
time to make sense of concepts, sort and group concepts, form relevant links between concepts, and organise concepts hierarchically.
Active cognitive processing of knowledge seems to be related to more complex, well-integrated cognitive structures for the

This article reports on the last of a series of iterative research studies involving students with learning disabilities in reform mathematics classrooms at the intermediate grade levels. This study reports the findings from a larger, year‐long case study that focused on ways to include students with learning disabilities and other students who are at risk for special education services in classwide discussions of problem solving. The data reported in this article detail the changes in teacher and student discourse over a nine‐week period in one classroom. Sources of data for this study included videotapes, audiotapes, and informal interviews with the teacher, a paraprofessional, and students. A quantitative analysis of the results indicates clear patterns of change in teacher and student discourse. Nonetheless, intentional efforts to include target students in the whole‐class discussions yielded instructional dilemmas that are underdescribed in the mathematics reform literature. Findings from this study have implications for special educators interested in mathematical problem solving, as well as math reformers who value the role of classroom discourse in daily instruction. 相似文献

In two experiments rats were given straight-alley training in the following sequence: continuous reward (CR), partial reward (PR), extinction (EXT). Independent groups differed only in the amount of CR training. In both experiments,. early-EXT performance was directly related to amount of CR training and late-EXT performance was inversely related to amount of CR training.
