Experimental and numerical investigation of flow forces in a seat valve using a damping sleeve with orifices

The power of hydraulic piston engines is much affected by the on-off valves which control the fuel injection of the piston assembly. Therefore, the opening time of the seat valve used as the on-off valve is optimized by minimizing the axial flow forces on the spool. A damping sleeve with orifices is proposed to change the valve internal geometry. Experimental and numerical investigations of the flow forces acting on the spool with and without the proposed damping sleeve are carried out to identify the differences in the flow field and to minimize the forces’ effect. The simulated results fit the experimental results well. Both results show that the proposed damping sleeve affects the pressure distribution along the spool cone surface and the jet stream direction significantly. The effects of the orifice’s width, height, and relative sleeve installation positions on the flow field and cavitation are assessed using simulation methods. As a result of the flow field changing, the damping sleeve can reduce the flow forces significantly and even reverse the forces’ direction at the cost of a little flow loss. The opening time of the seat valve can be reduced by 31% to 0.67 ms by using the proposed damping sleeve.

A number of researchers have reported increasing socio-economic inequality within Australian society. This result has usually been met with public apathy and political indifference. However, the results of this research conducted in Brisbane shows that the increasing social polarisation occurring in Australian society is being reflected in an increasing educational divide or polarisation. In terms of access to private education, and use of information technology the least advantaged students are faring worse than any other students. Teachers who are committed to achieving a just society through their teaching cannot ignore this situation. This finding emphasises that teaching for social justice must not only focus on intercultural issues but also return to a position of prime importance the goal of achieving greater economic equality.

科学教育是建设创新型国家、科教强国的重要支撑,培育更多优秀青少年学生学习和从事科技领域具有重要意义。“科学资本”由布迪厄的“资本”概念发展而来,被认为是预测青少年学生STEM职业期望的有效变量。为了更好地认识科学资本这一概念的本质及其教育价值,该文在对相关文献进行梳理的基础上,对科学资本的内涵进行了解析,对科学资本的构成维度进行了总结,对科学资本促进学生发展的价值进行了讨论,对如何将科学资本融入教育实践进行了介绍。该文认为具有丰富内涵的科学资本为审视科学教育提供了一个新的视角,为推进科学教育发展提供了新的着力点,即在培养学生科学素养的同时,应重视学生科学资本的发掘和构建;建议创设“学校—家庭—社会”协同育人环境,积极促进学生科学资本构建,增强学生与科学的亲密度,激励更多更优秀的学生在未来进入科技领域。科学资本及以其为导向的科学教学法为我国科学教育和科学教师培训提供了新的启示。

瑞利衰落信道下空时分组码的性能分析

空时分组码是利用多输入-多输出（MIMO）无线通信系统的本质特征。给出在瑞利衰落信道下正交空时分组码瞬时接收信噪比的一般表达式，在此基础上推导出正交空时分组码在M—PSK和M—OAM调制下误符号率的闭式表达式，并给出数值分析结果。结果表明，空时分组码是一种适于高速无线通信系统的优选方案。     

Getting Academically Underprepared Students Ready through College Developmental Education: Does the Course Delivery Format Matter?

Addressing high demand for developmental math instruction and low rates of successful completing of the developmental coursework, with cost and space constraints, has been an ongoing challenge for postsecondary institutions. With advances in online instructional technology, particularly those based on artificial intelligence, web-based instruction is increasingly considered as a way to alleviate these burdens. This is among one of the first efforts that uses a quasi-experimental design to compare the academic outcomes of students who take a developmental mathematics course in a blended setting that combines face-to-face instruction with an online intelligent tutorial system, ALEKS, to the academic outcomes of students who take the same course in a fully online setting. Results suggest that students receiving online-only instruction perform worse on the final exam and receive lower course grades. However, a cost-effectiveness analysis suggests that fully online instruction has both a lower cost per student enrolled and a lower cost per student passing the course.
